Surefire Hat

Hi Knitters,
The pattern for the Surefire Hat is available now! With design input from my son I think we created the perfect teenager hat. The Surefire Hat has it all for both warmth and style. As soon as my other son saw the first hat he just had to have one of his own. Repeat knitting at its best.

Just click on the buy now button and it will be sent to you in a pdf file via email. Here is a quick description:

Size: Average adult-size head, 21-23 inches. Don't forget that many little kids (as young as 2 or 3 years old) may already have a head this size, it's always best to measure if possible.

Yarn: Tahki Donegal Tweed Homespun (183 yards/skein), 1 skein of each color #852, #854, #848, #833 if you want the stripes like mine. If you want a solid hat 1 skein of the Donegal Tweed will make it!

Needles: US size 8 sixteen-inch circular needles and a set of 4 US size 8 double-pointed needles or the size to obtain gauge.

Crochet Hook
: (for the edging only) 5mm

Gauge: 4 1/2 stitches per inch

I hope your kids love this hat as much as mine do! You'll get plenty of requests for more, I am sure.
best, susie

ooh that hat looks great! i bet my brothers (teenaged/early twenties) would like this, and it's so hard to find things I think they'd like :) Thanks for sharing the pattern, I'll have to keep it in mind!

Hello Susan, Just wanted to stop by and tell you I finished my FIRST hat! Immediately starting another one from your book - so a big thank you for inspiring my daughter who taught me. It feels like something I could do forever and never grow weary or bored.

Yay Bev! It is a slippery slope so beware. I am glad your daughter taught you to knit. Thanks for sharing. Congratulations on your first hat.

I just bought the hat. Now to decide if I get to pick the yarn color or do I let the 14 year old pick out the colors. But I know that he will want black so maybe I had better let the sister pick out the colors. I can't wait to make him a new hat. My nephew always loves hand knit hats since none of his friends have hats exactly like his. He may say he wants a store bought hat but he always seems to pick out the hand knit ones to wear.

Susan, Hi,
I just bought the hat to start right away but it didn't give me a pdf link, it said "this item will be shipped to "blah blah blah"

Help :)

Susan, I was wondering if this pattern includes a method for ensuring "jogless stripes"? I've had trouble with that in the past and am still searching for the best way to work around that problem in the round (no pun intended!). If it doesn't include a solution, do you have a favorite technique?

Hi Lauren,
I have a an instructional section in Itty-Bitty Nursery on the jogless jog that includes illustrations.

However, you can google jogless jog and find instruction on the internet as well.

good luck,
susan

Did you line these with fleece? I saw your tutorial on lining the santa hat but I'm not sure how to do it on the earflaps.

Betz,
I do line these with fleece. It is the same as for the santa hat (see the tutorial on the sidebar). Line up the earflaps and pin to the fleece. Cut around the earflaps and work the same for the hat lining. The fleece lining is all one piece.

Hope that makes sense. You are too cute for asking.

Hi Susan... This is my first hat and I made it for my 15 yr.old son ( by request, no less!) I'm new to knitting and it was my first time using dpns and circular needles. Great fun! BTW, how does one post a pic to you?
