Corrections for Itty-Bitty Toys

Hi Knitters,
Although we all work incredibly hard to achieve perfection in our pattern writing, mistakes still happen. Thank you to the diligent knitters who take the time to contact me with any errors they may come across. This is immensely helpful to me. What would I do without you, dear Knitters?

With each subsequent printing of the book these corrections will be fixed. Here are the omissions and errors I have collected so far:

I'm saving these corrections...I've asked Santa for your book for Christmas. The giraffe & lamb are just too dang cute!

I love looking at your photos of the Itty Bitty Toys. They look so fun. I'm going to have to treat myself and get this book during the holidays. The godfather of my girls and his wife are preggers and due in July next year. I'll have plenty of time!

Thanks Susan!

The best laid plans are often turned off course. Thanks for the update. I'm also planning on needing all of these and had noticed the giraffe was off.

is there an easy-to-print version of the corrections? thanks!

Susan B. Anderson said...

christine,
I am just leaving the corrections page as a blog post so it is easy for me to update and make changes as needed.

It is very simple to copy and paste the text into your word program and then print it out.

Susan, I am wondering if there is somewhere that the stitich is explained to make the snake coil up. I am so confused by this.
Thanks

missyn said...

Susan, I am in need of some more explanation on how to make the snake coil. Could you direct me to a site that can explain this? Thanks

Amy said...

Just wanted to let you know I added the errata links to the relevant patterns on Ravelry. :)

I'm working on the Giraffe now myself. :)

Susan B. Anderson said...

missyn,
All you do to make the snake coil is take a length of yarn on a yarn needle and make a running stitch up one side of the snake and pull up so the snake curls up. Tie off and pull the end to the inside.
Good luck,
susan

missyn said...

Susan,
Thanks for the explanation, I finished the snake and love him!! I hate that I have to give him up as he is a present. I think he's my favorite now from the book. Thanks again.

Susan,
I just received your book for Christmas and can't wait to start. I'm looking for the Koigu KPM for the hippo, and can't seem to find the color recommended - is it discontinued or is it a typo? There are other pinks with a close color number, but not the listed one.

Susan B. Anderson said...

Hi Amy,
It is correct. I don't know if it is discontinued but any light pink would look just as good:)
Have fun!

Hi Susan,
Any tips on using fiberfill? My projects are never as round as yours are.

Also, I'm knitting the reversible frog/turtle. When you whipstitch the frog head to the body, did you whipstitch it about 1 inch down from the cast on edge? Mine seems too "wobbly" and I think I need to do it farther down, if that makes sense???

THANKS!

Susan B. Anderson said...

Hi Jennacar2,
Yes, just whipstitch the head farther out from the center of the top of the body to make it more stable. That will solve the problem:)

Susan on page 125 we reached the 36 stitches on Round 6, However, on round 10 increasing by K2, Kfb to reach 48 stitches, we are getting more than the 48. What are we doing Wrong????Sharon Lewis

Susan B. Anderson said...

Knit shop girl,
you have 12 sts on each needle.

Rnd 10: (k2, knit in the front and back of the next stitch), repeat to the end of the round. this increases 4 stitches per needle. 16 sts per needle, 48 sts total.

Hope that helps.

is the ear pattern correct for the wrap me up puppies?
Mine look so small, even in comparison to the body.

And I agree with the PP, your animals always look so much neater stuffed than mine do!

Susan B. Anderson said...

Christie,
It is correct. You can always make the ears bigger if you'd like.

good luck with your puppy!

Christie, Jeff and Kennedy said...

one more question. On the bobble for the wrap me up puppies, it says to cast on one, then KFB until there are 5 stitches on the needle.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but if I KFB from one stitch, I have 6 stitches in the 3rd row, but only 4 in the second row...
It's probably something I'm doing, and I'm quite possibly too tired to be working on this right now, but I'd love any advice. :)

Jessica said...

I just wanted to add how you helped me with round 36 of the wrap me up puppies just in case anyone else gets stuck. :)

On Round 36 you will (k3, k2tog) on needles 2 and 3.

Hi Susan…I’m currently making the giraffe, and i think there is something left out in the instructions on the head. After beginning the decrease rounds for the nose, after round 1 it says to “stuff with fiberfill”…but it never says to pull through the stitches on the back of the head and gather up tight to close the hole so that the fiberfill doesn’t come out. It says to do it for closing up the nose…but not the back of the head. I didn’t see the addition on the corrections for the itty bitty toys, so i just thought I’d mention it. he's coming out really cute!!! i love all of the itty bitty toys!

Hi Susan - I've made your lamb with Mia cotton (cannot find Astrakhan), but it was really tight to knit on size 4 needles. Do you have another substitute, or should I use larger needles?

Thanks so much! I'm going to make a black lamb with Mia, and probably lots more! Love this pattern - so easy, cute, fast and a GREAT baby gift!

Thanks,
Sandy

Susan B. Anderson said...

Hi Sandy,
If you like that yarn just go up a needle size or two but you want the fabric to remain fairly tight. That's how it is in toy knitting.

The Debbie Bliss yarn has been discontinued. Some are using Bernat Boucle but I am not familiar with it.

I really love your Giraffe. Any chance of helping me to do a Camel? All the others out there are either hokey or look poorly thought out. I'm contemplating altering the Giraffe to make due. I have a friend from Northern African having her first child and I thought it would be nice to do something different and more from her area. Thanks for any help, insight you might be able to give.
P.S. I really enjoy your patterns. I look forward to more!

Hi Susan,
I'm currently knitting the Santa from the Christmas Set and have a question about the bobble for the top of his hat. The pattern says to cast on one then kfb til 3 sts on right needle. (3 sts) Then, on row 4, pass the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd stitches over the 1st. (so, now I have 4 sts?). I'm assuming that the instructions for Row 1 are incorrect and should end with 4 sts. Is this right?

Thanks!

Stacey

Susan B. Anderson said...

stacey, pass the 2nd and 3rd over the first.

the first row is correct.

thanks,
susan

Stacey said...

Thanks for the bobble clarification, Susan. I'd also like to clarify for anyone else reading & confused by the instructions for Row 1. It reads cast on 1, then kfb til 3 sts on right needle. This tripped me up for a bit until I realized that what was essentially meant is "Row 1 - kfb, leave both 2 sts on needle. Knit into front again. Now there are 3 sts on right needle." At least this is how I did it and it worked out, leaving me with 3 sts and a cute little bobble!

I wonder if there is another term for an increase 2 which is what we're doing, right?

Thanks again! My Santa is almost done!

I'm working on the matryoshka. On page 124, top of the small doll, the directions read "continue, knitting every round until the top measures 3/4 inch from the purl rounds." Then, you do 2 decrease rounds, place a stitch marker, then "Knit every round until the top measures 1/2 inch from the purl rounds." Obviously, if it already was 3/4 inch, then it was already 1/2 inch. So, do you think that it was supposed to be 1/4 inch before the decrease rounds, or do you think it was supposed to be 1/2 inch from the placed marker? Help, I'm stuck! I wouldn't want the small doll to end up larger than the next doll!

Also, FYI, on page 121, the bottom of the large doll, you case on 9, divided by 3, 3 on each needle. Then round 2, you increase, "kfb in each stitch (6 sts on each needles, 9 sts total), I think this should be 19 sts total at this point.

Monyca with a y said...

But my martyoshka question still stands, if anyone has an idea for me?

This is my first time knitting toys from your book and I'm having a hard time getting the gauge correct for the bunny on page 39. I'm using Blue Sky Organic Cotton as called for and have gone all the way down to size one needles and still don't get 5 1/2 stitches per inch. At size one I'm around 5 stitches per inch. Any suggestions?

Christy T. said...

I'm working on the babydoll set. On page 129, after rearranging the stitches to work the knee bend, I have 18 on needle one. Then when I switch to working back and forth on needle one, row one totals 14 stitches used. What do I do with the other 4 stitches left on the needle? I may be completely misunderstanding, so thanks for your patience!

Hi, I am knitting the "a new sock money" and I have started making arms. I have knitted the arms to 3 &1/2 inches and am starting the hands. (p. 72) When round one is over I have 12 stitches, 4 on each needle. Round two says k5,m1,k2,m1,k5. I only have 4 stitches per needle so how is it possible to do that? Thanks!

Amy said...

Hi Susan,

Do you know where I might be able to find the fabric you used for the Nested Boxes? I haven't been able to find anything quite as cute as you used.

Thank you!
Amy

Susan B. Anderson said...

Amy - the fabric is anna maria horner, she has a site and blog under her name.

Susan B. Anderson said...

I think you are talking about the short row bend for the knee. I don't have my book with me right now but you just ignore the stitches at the ends of the needle when you turn around and head the other direction.

I hope that helps.
susan

Susan B. Anderson said...

Becki, that doesn't sound quite right. hmmm... do you have a local yarn shop where you could ask someone to look at your gauge?

If not, I would not knit the bunny on a size one needle with the Blue Sky Cotton. That would be really hard. Gauge is not the most important thing when you are knitting toys. It is good to be close though.

I would just make sure you are getting a nice dense fabric that isn't too painful to knit.
susan

Christy T. said...

I want to make sure I understand that. Needle 1 has 18 st on it, needles 2 and 3 each have 3 st.

I switch to working back and forth on needle 1, (row 1: K11, K2tog, k1,turn). When I turn, I'll be leaving 4 st on that needle, so I'll need to get another needle to continue with?

Somehow I think I'm missing something...

Susan B. Anderson said...

Christy T. ,
It is short row shaping if you want to google it or look it up on youtube. You knit back and forth in the center of the needle and each time you knit one more stitch so that by the end you will have knit all of the stitches.

Hi Susan,

I am making the Santa (love him!) and had a Question about his hat. On page 114 when doing the stripping with the rosso and bleached, it says to "repeat rounds 4 through 7 until the hat measure 1 1/2 inches from the cast on edge.". From the Picture and my hat so far, it doesn't seem like 1 1/2 inches is enough length before decreasing?.? Thank you for any help.

I love your patterns so much! They have such lovely expression in their shape! Thank you.

Susan B. Anderson said...

Melanie,
My hat is 1 1/2 inches for the sample. If you want to make the hat longer before decreasing then that is fine!

Thanks for the kind words:)

LeslieE said...

Hi again, I'm just a little confused. So on round 2, does that mean all the stitches will end up on one needle?
There are currently four stitches per needle, now do I take a stitch from the second needle to make it k5 and then continue the pattern from there? Thanks again.

Susan B. Anderson said...

Leslie,
No, not all of the stitches end up on one needle on round 2. You may have to shuffle the stitches around to make it work.

Hi Susan, Sorry for the duplicate post if this is one, I was having trouble with my computer. I am wondering if the color of the koala mama and baby might be a typo. In looking at Blue Sky's colors, Stone #626 seems to be a tan color, rather than gray. Graphite #625 looks more like the koala photo in your book. Is this a mistake or is the color of my computer screen throwing me off?
Thanks. I love the book!

Susan B. Anderson said...

Susan - I believe the colors listed are accurate in the book. Sometimes photography makes colors look a little different.

Susan, I am making the reversible blue bird and egg. I had a question when making the egg. When it says to leave a stitch marker on round six and then knit in stockinette stitch for two inches, does it mean work in stockinette stitch on the first needle for two inches? Thanks!

Kate - you work back and forth in stockinette stitch on all three dpns.

Susan, I am making the Baby Doll Set. It is for my 2 year old granddaughter and I want to be sure the matching hat will fit her. What age is yours designed for? Thanks, Stephanie

Susan B. Anderson said...

Stephanie, You can find out the size in inches by taking the number of stitches to cast on and divide it by the number of stitches per inch in the gauge information. I usually recommend that a hat be 1 to 2-inches smaller than the actual head circumference so it stays on. I think the hat was made to fit a young child.

Hello Susan,

I love your book! I have made the snake, the pull toy, the felted balls and I"m working on the mouse/cat. I'm also working on the egg/bluebird and was confused. Page 161, round 6, where you 'turn and work back and forth in stockinette stitch. This implies you are just using one needle and going in stockinette stick for two inches and then back in the round again. I did this for the egg and have two openings, one on each side when the instructions implied that there would only be one opening.

Perhaps this will be clear when I make the bird and put them together but it seems very lopsided and doesn't look much like the picture yet.

I re-read the instructions and don't' see any other way to do it, unless you would somehow move the stitches from one of the three needles and do the stockinette stitch for two inches there and then go back to the round but I think you would still have the double opening, not a single opening. Is this correct?

Susan B. Anderson said...

Hi Anonymous,
You are working back and forth on all three dpns for 2-inches.
So you turn your work around and have the inside or the purl side facing you and purl to the last stitch on the third needle. Turn the work around so the knit side is facing you and knit to the last stitch on the third needle. Repeat purling one row and knitting one row until the opening measures 2-inches.

After the last knit row you will join again to work in the round.

There is only one opening along one side of the egg.

I hope this helps.

Hi Susan. I've decided to make the Egg to Bluebird in Itty Bitty toys.Is there a page missing? I don't see the instructions on how to attach the two parts to make it reversible. Also, is there a video for this pattern? Thanks!

Dina Roosth

Susan B. Anderson said...

Hi Dina,
I just looked in the book and there isn't a page missing but it appears that there is a sentence or two missing! I can't believe I haven't heard this before today. Here's what it should say:

After the egg and bird are finished, place the egg inside the bird's body with the wrong sides facing each other. With a cut length of yarn on a yarn needle, whipstitch around the opening to attach the egg to the body. While you are stitching the opening be sure to stretch the fabric so it is not too tight at the seam, you will need some flexibility to turn the toy inside out. Pull all ends to the inside of the toy and trim to stay inside.

Thank you so much fur letting me know.

I'm knitting "Ben & Buddy" and find the instructions straightforward, but on page 29 for the dog leash you haven't mentioned the number of stitches to cast on. In the pictures it looks less than the 6 stitches on the legs.
Also I intend knitting the girl version (I have the book with the three females). I'm knitting it for my older daughter who is due to have a baby soon. I wanted to have dolls reflecting the family, and want to knit a second girl as an angel to represent my late daughter. I was wondering if you have a pattern for a baby, otherwise I could adapt one of the adult versions to make it little.
Many thanks, Fe
