Episode 31 ~ Cabled Gigi & Yarn Giveaway!

Hi, Knitters,
I hope you are having a great long weekend here in America. We had a family cookout last night which was really fun. I love having all of my kids and their significant others around. There is always a lot of laughter and storytelling. And there is always a lot of good food! The hot weather continues with a projected high of 93 degrees today. It is tough to do much at the height of that heat. I'll get outside on the early side today.

I recorded a new podcast episode. If interested, please be sure to enter to win the yarn over on YouTube by simply leaving a comment that includes your Ravelry username.

Emmen

Hi, Knitters,
Meet my new hat pattern, Emmen! I knit a quick hat for my son right before Christmas and he absolutely loved the way it fit and looked. And I loved knitting it. I quickly knit up another one and this is the one in the photos here.

So I thought the pattern might be something you'd be interested in, as well.

I have the pattern priced at an introductory special of $3.50, no code is necessary. This price will go through Jan. 12, 2018, and then the price will be set at $5.00.

The other thing is that the hat uses one skein of Barrett Wool Co. Home Worsted Weight. If you purchase any of our worsted weight yarn and write KIT in the order notes, we will throw in a FREE Emmen pattern Ravelry Download Code with your order! This offer goes through Jan. 12th, as well.

The model is a family friend, Mark, who is visiting from Emmen. Emmen is a city an hour or two outside of Amsterdam, thus the pattern name. A few days ago he had to go back to school in Emmen and we miss him around here already. Mark generously modeled for us and the hat looked so great on him and he really liked it so I ended up giving it to him in appreciation. He wore it non-stop for the rest of his visit which I took as a good sign.

The top of the hat is so pretty. It continues on with strategically placed decreases in pattern. I love the simplicity, look and fit of the hat. It fits men nicely but it also fits me perfectly. I think I am going to knit one up for myself.

The Home Worsted Weight comes in lots of beautiful colors but the color in the photos is Scout, which is a rich shade of teal.

Also, I just filmed and posted two tutorial videos for the Sven and Solveig dolls. I show how I did Sven's beard and Solveig's hair over on the Barrett Wool Co. Journal.

The pattern booklet for Carol Anderson's Sven & Solveig is available right here! The pattern is only available in this booklet. It is not available for download.

I love these dolls so much. We have more kits on order for the dolls. I'm not exactly sure when they will be available but hopefully soon. If you would like to get an instant automatic email notice when they are listed all you have to enter your email on the product page. Then you be the first to know!

Have a wonderful Sunday. We have a fresh dusting of snow on the ground and the temperature is supposed to be a little friendlier today. My fingers are crossed.

A Bear and A Bunny Suit ~ new pattern + The Knit Show

Hi, Knitters,
I hope you are all doing well. The weather around here hasn't seemed very fall-like. It has been unseasonably warm but hopefully, it will start cooling down a bit coming up in the days. I love the fall just as so many others do. Plus, the fall season makes me fall more in love with my knitting every year for some reason. I keep saying it but it really is high knitting season right now. So much is happening that I am having a hard time keeping up.

Yesterday I released a "new" pattern. Let me explain. The original pattern for the bear in a bunny suit was published over a year ago in a book called Drop Dead Easy Knits. The copyright has now reverted to me and so I took it upon myself to update and modify the original pattern so it is even simpler in many respects and even cuter in all respects. I rewrote the pattern and moved and changed some things in the design so I renamed the pattern slightly. It is now called A Bear and A Bunny Suit. Doesn't that sound like a storybook title?

I also wanted to use my bouncy beautiful Home Worsted Weight wool from Barrett Wool Co. which wasn't released yet when the book came out. If you haven't tried our Home line of yarns you really should. It is a joy with which to knit. It feels so good running through your fingers and onto your needles.

So the pattern is now called A Bear and a Bunny Suit and it is on sale right now through Wednesday, Oct. 11th, 2017. No code is needed. The pattern is priced at $3.50. On Oct. 12th the pattern will be priced at $5.00. The pattern is available on Ravelry and Barrett Wool Co.

We have kits over on Barrett Wool Co. for A Bear in A Bunny Suit but they are going so fast. We will definitely add more after we get the first batch done and out the door. Remember to sign up on the product page for an automatic email reminder when the item is back in stock. You'll literally be the first to know as soon as something is restocked.

Here is some information you might like to know:

This new A Bear and A Bunny Suit pattern is a modified version of the original pattern that first appeared in the book Drop Dead Easy Knits in 2016. I’ve changed quite a few things in the written pattern and design for this new version so I decided to release it with a slightly modified name, too.
A Bear and A Bunny Suit is a charming pint-size toy with a knit-in bunny suit including an attached hood that pulls off and on. You will fall in love with this little bear. The design and pattern feature an almost completely seamless construction and lots of specific guidance throughout to make sure your Bear turns out just right.

Arms, Legs and Bunny Ears: US size 6 (4mm) double-pointed needles, set of four
Or size needed to obtain gauge
Gauge
Smaller needles: 6 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch
Larger needles: 5.5 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch
Materials
Locking stitch markers
Yarn needle
Scrap yarn
Fiberfill
Small amount of black worsted weight yarn for the face embroidery
Optional: Two 6mm safety eyes (safety eyes are considered a choking hazard for infants and young children)
Note: If the toy is for an infant or young child use the black worsted weight yarn to embroider the eyes instead of the safety eyes.
Construction Notes
The body is worked from the bottom up and in the round. The hood is then picked up at the neck using set-aside stitches and is worked flat. The hood stitches are placed on scrap yarn. The head is worked separately in the round and is then stitched to the top of the body (this is the only seam in the entire toy). The hood is then finished off. The bear ears, bunny ears, arms and legs are picked up and knit directly onto the toy.

The little brown bear could not be any sweeter. I love it when the hood is pulled down.

We are offering the Bear kit in three different colors, Priscilla (pink), Wishing Well (blue) and Grassland (green). It would be cute in so many colors of Barrett Wool Co. Home Worsted

Even sweeter from the back....

I always get a kick out of knitting a foot or a toe while the finished toy is hanging upside-down. It just looks so funny. The good thing with A Bear and A Bunny Suit is that when you are done knitting that last stitch on the foot, the bear is completely finished! It is a fantastic feeling.

And now for one more exciting development.

Back in July I flew down to Austin, Texas for about 24 hours. There I filmed a segment for The Knit Show with Vickie Howell. I've put the The Handmade Holiday Episode in the post here for you to watch. I come in at about the 4 minute mark.

But, the entire first season has been released on YouTube. All ten episodes are now up and ready for your free viewing. The show is incredibly well done and I am proud to be a tiny part of the show.

So I had a birthday last week and on that day my new book with Quince & Co. called Kindred Knits was officially released, and The Knit Show was released as well. It was quite a day to remember.

Phew! What a week. Have a super Sunday, friends. I'll be back soon with more.

Startup Library Knitting on Craftsy & ZK Retreat 2017

Hi, Knitters,
I am so proud and excited to announce my newest Craftsy class today called Startup Library Knitting! Craftsy has started a new class series that are truly for the beginner. There are Startup Library classes in sewing, baking, watercolors, weaving, cake decorating, embroidery, and now knitting. Last May I spent a week at the Craftsy studio filming this new class.

I am offering a 50% off affiliate link to anyone interested in giving the class a try.

I know that many of you already know how to knit or you probably wouldn't be reading this blog. But many of you, I'm sure, get asked to teach or teach others how to knit. If you are looking for a resource to recommend to new knitters or you want to get ideas for teaching new knitters this class will be a great resource. I really start from scratch and it is divided up so you can click on specific techniques for a quick view or refresher.

Click on play to see the preview trailer for the Startup Library Knitting class!

It's like a dictionary for new knitters. You can quickly and easily look up any technique at a glance. I also have included three easy starter projects and patterns in the class, a pair of fingerless mitts, a textured cowl and a stripey hat. All of these are packed with important techniques for a new knitter to learn.

After taking this class the new knitter will truly be ready to move on to other and more advanced projects. After viewing the class yesterday I can truly say that it is really well done and well organized.

For another topic today, last weekend Barrett Wool Co. traveled to Rochester, Minnesota to vend for the first time. Megan and Amy, of the Stockinette Zombies podcast, were hosting their 5th annual Zombie Knitpocalypse Retreat. There were 200 attendees. It's a well-run and fun retreat that I can highly recommend. I started the weekend on Friday night as the guest speaker which was really fun.

Then early Saturday morning we set up our Barrett Wool Co. booth for the first time. We had such a good time and we learned so much from this experience. It was a great place to start because the market was open for two hours in the morning just for retreat attendees and then there was a closed lunch break and then the market re-opened and included free admission for the public for two hours in the afternoon.

It was fast and furious! Our booth was absolutely swamped the entire time. People were incredibly enthusiastic about Barrett Wool Co. yarns and seeing them in person for the first time. We had all 16 colors of our Home Collection yarns and a lot of our Wisconsin Woolen Spun yarns. It all flew off the shelves.

My business partner and son, Evan, and his wife, Molly (formerly known as Miss Molly) were there checking people out and packaging up purchases in our signature printed bags. They did a great job and were so happy with the event. It was fun to have them with me. It was really a whirlwind of the best kind!

We brought along some Branches & Buds sweater kits in our Wisconsin Woolen Spun yarns and a few of them didn't sell so they are back up and available in the shop. These go really quickly so if you are interested hop on over and snag one for yourself.

Here Molly is modeling the gorgeous Branches & Buds sweater! It is a winner, both fun to knit and even better to wear.

I'll be back soon with more, Knitters. I hope you are all doing well.

Baa ~ new pattern with tutorials!

Hi, Knitters,
I just finished filming five video tutorials for my new lamb pattern called, Baa. I am so excited to be able to provide pattern specific tutorials now. I think it will be super helpful and a good resource.

First some links:
Pattern: Baa (click here to find out more)
Yarn: Barrett Wool Co. Home Fingering Weight
Baa #1: Colors: Picket Fence, Peppercorn, Red Flannel and Ellie Gray
Baa #2: Colors: Priscilla, Bear and Picket Fence

I am doing these videos in a bit of a different way. Since the tutorials are so pattern specific I will be providing a link for pattern purchasers to get access to the videos. The videos will be available through this link on my Barrett Wool Co. YouTube Channel. Please go subscribe! I'd love to see you over there. There will be lots of other videos available without a link, too.

If you already purchased the pattern, no worries, as soon as the videos are available I'll send out an update to you. For new purchasers, the link will be included in the pattern for you. All of the new patterns are available on both Barrett Wool Co. and on Ravelry. The link to Ravelry is always on the pattern page for easy access.

I just had to share this beautiful shawl being knit by Olivia of @thishandmadelife on Instagram. It is the first photo I've seen of Barrett Wool Co. being knit up in the wild and it made my heart stop.

Olivia's shawl is being worked in the Field colorway of the Barrett Wool Co. Home Fingering Weight.

This is one of my favorite colorways and it took quite a few dip dye tests before it came out exactly right. And here's what Olivia of @thishandmadelife had to say:

"I am absolutely loving your yarn @susanbanderson! This color, the squish, the way it knits.. everything! Knitting up my third half hansel a pattern by@gudrunjohnston "

Thank you so much, Olivia! What a thrill to see something so beautiful being knit with our new yarn and then to read such kind words..... it makes me happy.

Field was inspired by the prairie grasses at the end of the summer, in late August and early September. The shades of green turn more golden and subdued. There is also that golden hue in the air that is indescribable. That time when the wheat grass is so high that it hovers overhead when walking down hiking trails.

Field is this color exactly. It evokes feelings of fall, leaves, brisk temperatures, and cozy nights by the fire. It is warm and friendly and it mixes so well with other colors.

I really want a new pair of socks in this colorway.

Anyway, I just want to mention one more fun thing going on quickly.

I'm teaching a Vogue Knitting Live New York! Registration is open and I hope to see you in class.

Thank you so much for all of the love last week and now this week. Barrett Wool Co. had a fantastic start and we are thankful and happy to see the warm reception. Lots more in store!

p.s. Can you believe it's Thanksgiving week? I can't, but I'll be ready somehow.

New Craftsy Class ~ My First Toe-Up Socks!

Hi, Knitters,
First, the giveaway for my new Craftsy sock class is over, the winner was selected by Craftsy and I have contacted the winner via email with the link to receive the class! Thanks to Craftsy for the class. In one day we had close to 800 entries to win so that was remarkable. Thank you for the interest.

Now for today's news.

Today is an exciting day. I have a brand new Craftsy class has launched, My First Toe-Up Socks! It's really here!

This is my third Craftsy Class. You may or may not remember my other two classes (these are 50% off links for these two classes, too!):

and

All of the links to the class are provided to me by Craftsy and they are affiliate links. I get a small credit when you go through the links provided on my blog for Craftsy. Thank you if you click through here. I appreciate it.

All of the photos in the post have been provided by Craftsy. Here is the video trailer for the class:

I am so excited to be back with Craftsy once again. The toe-up sock class was a pleasure to prepare and a pleasure to film. It was hard and thorough work but I loved it. I researched and experimented and knit numerous toe-up sock using different techniques until I decided on the final version of the sock I would teach for the class. It was fun and exhilarating to dive into one subject so wholeheartedly. I really enjoyed the entire process.

I am usually a cuff-down sock knitter so for me to switch directions of the sock construction and think about a "first-time" toe-up sock knitter was pretty easy for me. My goal for this class was to gather and to teach the simplest and most effective techniques, in my opinion, for knitting toe-up socks. I think it worked out well.

The rainbow yarn in the title card is from Quaere Fibre.

Required skills:
A skill prerequisite for the class is that the knitter has a general knowledge of the knit and purl stitches and is comfortable working in the round on either Magic Loop or on double-pointed needles. This is important! I go over these methods of working in the round but I am assuming the student already has a prior grasp on the concepts.

Techniques and information covered in the class:
~ Both double-pointed needles and Magic Loop techniques are included

~ Pattern sizes include 2 weights of yarn and 3 sizes for each weight:
Worsted Weight socks in Small (Medium, Large)
Fingering Weight socks in Small (Medium, Large)

~ Foot measuring to pick the correct size

~ Judy's Magic Cast-On with simple tips for memorizing

~ Afterthought Heel waste yarn placement with a twist

~ Texture and cuff alternatives, adding different yarns/colors, and how to make matching socks with striping or patterning yarns

~ Russian Bind-Off in pattern for a stretchy finish

~ Picking up stitches and working the Afterthought Heel (and how to close the gaps at the the top of the heel!), with a method for making a deeper and better fitting heel using this technique

Six detailed lessons are provided. The pace is comfortable and informative, intended for true first-timers, but it is chock-full of information for experienced knitters as well.

I had a great time filming at Craftsy. It has changed so much since I was there in 2011. The company is at a new building with at least 5 studios filming at the same time. The building is fun and bubbling with creativity. When I filmed five years ago the small studio was about 100 degrees due to the burning hot lights. This time the temperature was so comfortable. I dressed thinking it was going to be so hot under the lights but it turns out I could have worn my handknits. If there is a next time I will dress for the more comfortable temps.

Here are some photos from the class!

I knit the worsted weight sample socks in the Craftsy yarn, Cloudborn. It's a superwash merino. I believe Craftsy has kits available for the class.

The sock above was knit in different colors to show the parts of the sock, a sock map! I refer to the sock map sock throughout the class.

I hope you enjoy the new class and maybe the old classes, too! Let me know if you decide to partake.

Enjoy!

Susan B. Anderson's Kids' Knitting Workshop ~ Giveaway!

Cover photo provided by Artisan Books/Photographed by Lauren Volo

Hi, Knitters,
Be sure to read to the end to find out about a huge giveaway opportunity! Also, early registration for Yarnover 2016 in Minneapolis starts Jan. 9th at 8am! It's on April 23rd and it sells out quick.
Here is the LINK for Yarnover.

A couple of weeks ago my latest book was published, Susan B. Anderson's Kids' Knitting Workshop. Today I am very excited to share a little bit about it with you. I have been teaching kids to knit for many years now. I have taught kids in small groups, individually, and through my daughters' Girl Scout Troops and in a lot of different settings. Do any of you remember these photos from TC's Girl Scout Troop's knitting lessons at my house in 2009?

If you want to see and read more about how I taught the Girl Scouts to knit Click Right Here!

First of all, this book was a labor of love on two topics that are near and dear to my heart, kids and knitting. The book is geared to reach 8-12 year olds but it is a good book for any age person, including adults, wanting to learn how to knit. The book takes you step-by-step through the basics of knitting in the round as the ideal place to start, and lesson-by-lesson techniques are added through tutorials and projects. If the beginning knitter works through the book she/he will come away with a great base of knowledge about knitting,  and could tackle any number of projects out there in the world of patterns. It's exciting to think about.

Click here to see the Kids' Knitting Workshop on Amazon! (I am not an affiliate, by the way.)

Included in the book are 17 do-able, snappy projects that are fun and appealing for a wide age-range but will also hold young attention spans. Most of the projects are fairly quick and are knit on needles ranging from a US size 7 to a US size 13 or so.  There are a couple of slightly bigger projects including a tube scarf and a pillow.

The photography, by New York City-based photographer Lauren Volo, is fun and bright, and the models are adorable. One aspect of the book that I am especially impressed by is the illustrated tutorials by Alison Kolesar. Alison is a remarkable artist. I would provide a photo of my hands doing a certain technique and then Alison would create the illustrations to show exactly what I intended. It was a really fun and successful aspect of the book. Both of these creative women were wonderful and added so much to the pages of the book.

There have been some generous reviews if you'd like to read or hear more about the book from some other industry people. Here are a few to start:

The Knitting Pipeline

Knitty.com Cool Stuff Reviews

The Knitmore Girls

The Knitgirllls

I have made a couple of supplementary book tutorial videos on my YouTube. One video is on how to do magic loop and the other is on how to use double-pointed needles.

Click here to visit my YouTube Channel, SusanBAnderson.

Okay, here are a few of my favorite projects from the book.....
