I'm working on the Baby's Texture Blanket from Itty Bitty Nursery. Saw the Smocking Stitch update -- thanks for that. But is the repeat really rows 3-7? That doesn't seem to make sense because you'd be alternating the front and back of the work? I am wondering whethre it should be 2- 7 or something else?

i am knitting the cardigan from the pure and sweet layette on page 63 and i am on the left front. for the neck shaping it says for row one that you should bind off 4 and then knit to the end, but it is on a wrong side so it is knitting on the purl side. should it be purl to the end instead?

ReplyDeleteThe page 57 booties are made from a 6 inch square that is folded in half so the bootie is 3 inches long. So you can make the square any size you would like, 7, 8, 9, 10 inches. Then you can knit the sole of the boot to fit into the bottom of the bootie. Knit the top first, then knit the sole to fit.

ReplyDeleteFor the spout you are starting at the bottom and working in rows and increasing. Then you join the stitches to knit in the round to the end of the spout.
I really did knit for 1 1/2 inches before the seed stitch on the spout. It may look longer because it's been stretched a bit. You can make the spout any length you'd like before starting the seed stitch.

I'm knitting the three little pigs puppet set from Itty-Bitty Nursery (my 4-year old is excitedly looking over my shoulder telling me that I need to knit faster). I think that the instructions for the Hut of Sticks for the back should be to cast on 30 stitches instead of 20 (to end up with six 5-stitch I-cords). Thanks for all your great/fun patterns!
ReplyDeleteI'm knitting the flower cardigan from the Itty-Bitty Nursery book (it's so adorable!). Anyway, I am on the left front and it says to cast on 23 stitches and do the seed stitch. Doesn't the seed stitch need to be done on an even number of stitches - otherwise you get a rib stitch. So should I add a stitch or decrease a stitch? And how does that affect the rest of the pattern?

ReplyDeleteUsually seed stitch is worked over even numbers of stitches but it also works fine with even numbers. All you have to do is to be sure to work the opposite stitch, knit or purl, in the next row. If the stitch below is a purl, then knit it. If the stitch below is knit, then purl it:)

I don't have the mobile at home right now due to the traveling trunk show so I can't measure the arm diameter. It fit into the cord so it was pretty skinny.
The bead container was just a little circular container, maybe an inch across or so. I glued the lid shut after I put some beads inside. If you go to the bead aisle in a craft store you'll see these little plastic containers.
Good luck with everything and your knitting. You can do it with your knitting and I am glad you are branching out with new and challenging projects. That's the best.

Susan, I am stumped on the teapot... a very cool piece de resistance of knitting, I might add, but when I was sewing the handle on, it just got sort of longer and longer and longer.... suggestions?

ReplyDeleteI am not sure why the handles would keep getting longer and longer when you are sewing them on. If you knit a tight i-cord it shouldn't stretch that much. I am stumped on that one.
For the pellets you can add or not as much as you please or none at all and simply use the stuffing. For the pellets popping through, I don't seem to have any trouble with that but you could always sew a muslin or cotton bag for the pellets and place that inside the teapot and then add the stuffing.

Hi there! I am making the mini turtleneck sweater and am getting confused on the number of stitches. It says to cast on 24, but when you do the neck opening, it says:

Hi Susan, I absolutely love your books and hope there will be more... I am currently doing the circles and stripes blanket and jacket and have a slight problem with the size of the rectangles. By way of history, I have finished a couple of hats from itty bitty and the cozy boatneck sweater and the clothesline all using recommended yarn and needle size. In fact I have never needed to switch needle sizes to get the right gauge... Back to the circles/stripes: I have had to use 7 instead of the recommended 8 the get the size and desired proportions of blanket as pictured in the book. This isn't a particular big deal except I knit almost half the blanket before I started really looking at it. It was about 18" wide and 15" long (36 x 30) without border. Seems an awkward size especially for a stroller....So I ripped it out and with size 7 am now true to size in pattern. Did you really knit the item in the book with size 8? I am curious because my experience with both hats and nursery led me to trust blindly the recommended sizes without concern for actual gauge (stupid me).

The only thing I can say about your gauge woes is that the Blue Sky Cotton, if that is what you are using, has a fairly large gauge range.
Also, I still have to check my gauge for projects, especially when I am knitting other people's patterns, and while I am usually spot on there are times when I am off, too.

Hi I'm currently working on the Garden Mice Mobile, which is rather adorable~but I've had issue with the hands/feet/petal instructions. They read (k, s1 purlwise w/ yarn in back)repeat to the end of the row... for ___# of rows. Well should I purl the second row? And after I've turned the piece into a tube (which I assume is lengthwise), should I sew the open sides and other end together?

ReplyDeleteI am working on the Circles Stroller Jacket and have gotten to the point in the sleeve where you wrote a correction to leave out row 5 (repeat row 1).
Then after you repeat rows 1-4 another 3(4,5) times you say to work two rows 3(1,0) times with row 1 being a purl row and row 2 being k1,ssk, knit to the last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1.
If you skip row 5 from the previous set of directions then you would be doing 2 purl rows in a row as Row 4 from that set is purl and Row 1 from this set is purl.
Wouldn't this disrupt the stockinette pattern?

Itty-Bitty Nursery question: Mouse Mobile.
ReplyDeleteI've created my mice and am working on the hands/feet. I am completely confused. When I work every row (k1, sl1) I get junk. How does this make hands/feet? And there aren't any decreases? The pictures look like there should be decreases. I can't even get to the part about making a tube and turning inside out. Which seems counterintuitive at this point, but sometimes things make more sense when I have a working piece in front of me. Please help, I'm not sure what went wrong, but I'm lost.
I'm working on the "Baby's Texture Blanket" on the Bubble Gum Drop-Stitch Square. The way the directions read the square is worked in stockinette other than the stitches that will be dropped, but the close up pictures of the blanket you can see that it was worked in garter stitch. Which should it be? I guess it really can come down to personal preference, but I was just curious if there was a reason the directions were different than what was worked for the sample.

ReplyDeleteThe texture blanket square that you are referring to is knit in stockinette not garter. I knitted it myself so I know for certain. I don't know which picture you are looking at but it is definitely stockinette.

(Of course, I know how to seam with a garter stich, just don't understand exactly where and what I am to seam). I have used the decorative whip stich to seam the front as directed...but don't understand how the rest comes together to make the bootie. Of course, I have only knitted a few of your most simple hat patterns and a baby blanket. I am due in October and want to master booties, but just don't understand how to finish these things. ReplyDeleteAfter you gather for the toe of the bootie you sew the seam on the top for the directed length. Next you sew up the back heel seam using a garter stitch seam. You seam from the back corners down to the bottom of the heal.
Once it is gathered at the toe you can kind of see how the bootie is formed and where to seam.

Hello again! I am now in the process of putting the grumpy old bear together and he is looking great! Now my issue involves attaching the top of the foot to the bootom of the foot (to then attach to the legs). The instruction says to line up the cast on and bound off edges but I am having a hard time visualizing this; the top of the foot is only knit until it is one inch in height and the bottom foot piece is knit until it is 1 & 1/2 inches in height so they don't line up. When I tried to sew them together it looked like a type of deformed disaster. :-) Do you line them up on one side perhaps? Maybe a tutorial idea? Any help you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you so much, Cristin

ReplyDeleteThe top is larger than the bottom of the foot. This gives the foot a more rounded appearance. Just sew the top to the bottom easing in the larger top of the foot to fit around the smaller bottom.
The edges shouldn't line exactly they should just be facing the same direction.

ReplyDeleteThe squares are garter stitch so they should lay flat. You may have to block if your squares are not laying flat. A lot of steaming and even a light press should take care of that issue.

I did each matching pair with success, but I'm stuck on how to attach the "sand piece" with the "nut piece" (horizontal). Do I use the mattress stitch again for this? Or a different method? Yes, you are right on the correction for the sleeve. It should be 5 times for the largest size. I will correct that.
The sleeve length is correct as is. You are adding an edging on after the 5 1/2 inches. Also, different sleeves may be different lengths due to the type of shoulder style or where the shoulder seam falls.

Sorry for the delay. The instructions are saying to decrease every other row which falls on a knit row. Decrease row, purl, decrease row, purl....
It should say 5 times instead of 6 times for the decrease numbers for the largest size to get 38 stitches after the decrease.

ReplyDeleteI got my zipper from http://tinyzippers.com it is listed in the back of the book, too.
You can also custom size zippers by cutting them and stitching over the end to secure and keep the pull from flying off the end.

Itty Bitty Nursery question:
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to knit the cupcake mittens. The instructions say to cast on an even number of stitches, yet the number of stitches you've instructed to be distributed to each needle equal an odd number. Is this an error? Also, I want to ensure that I'm supposed to be using #3s, as opposed to the $7s you've listed in your book.

This is my favorite knitting book! While I was pregnant with my daughter, I made her the pure and sweet layette ruffle blanket. She is now 16 months old and the blanket is her lovely. She won't go to sleep without it:)
ReplyDeleteFor her third birthday, I want to make the adorable cupcake tea set. To make it extra special, I've asked both of her Grandmothers and her Great Aunt for help. Each woman is going to make a couple pieces to the set and then I am going to stitch tags at the bottom of each piece so that she knows which loving family member made it for her. I'm so excited to start knitting!
Wondering if you could post a close-up picture of the creamer. Its helpful to have visuals and its the only piece that is kind of hard to see in the pictures. On page 121, its in the background behind the sugar bowl.

On the very first sequence of the decrease rnd. k1,ssk,k to last 3 sts,k2tog,k1. work 3 rows end with a purl. Does that mean R-1 k a dec, p,R-2 k a dec, p R-3 k a dec,p R-4 k a dec, p. ?? Then repeat last 4 rows 4x. It would make it 42sts with the first sequence not including the second part. And then theres still the decrease rnd where you dec every other row.I'm so confused. I'm sorry just can't figure it out.

Another Itty-Bitty Nursery book question:
ReplyDeleteI'm knitting the cozy book pillow. I also have found that my squares don't lie flat, so I'm glad to see that perhaps blocking them will help when I'm all done. I have found that the number of stitches to pick up on each side don't always correspond to the number of stitches that are on that side. Sometimes there are 2 or more stitches too many, sometimes too few. Has no one else found this? Do you have any suggestions for how to deal with this situation? When it's the end of a garter row, I pick up in the "bump". When it's the cast-on or cast-off row, I pick up through the two sides of the stitch. Thank you for any suggestions you might have.

ReplyDeleteSometimes when you are picking up the stitches on a side you are including the stitches that are added on to the end of row from the previous side and that is why there might be some "extra" stitches added on. I didn't have any trouble with the squares laying flat after I blocked.
I wrote how many stitches I picked up on each side but if you feel you need to add or subtract a couple of stitches on a side that is fine, it won't make any difference in the end.
Did anyone find out the brand of the mobile - I can't find it anywhere either?

ReplyDeleteI have a questin on the hood. I am making the 0 - 6 month size. There are 38 stitches picked up and knitted for the hood. After the purl row, the instructions state to K4, MI across, knitting the extra stitches. My calculations say that this is nine new stitches. 38 + 9 = 47. The pattern states there will be 46 stitches. If 47 is correct, then the 6 - 12 month size instructions given to P2tog at the beginning of the last purl row should apply to the 0 - 6 month size also. Looking at the 6 - 12 and 12 - 18 month instructions, they would each have 50 (40/4 = 10 40 +10 = 50) and 55 (44/4 = 11 44 + 11 = 55) stitches, respectively, after the increase row. This would mean that the P2tog would apply to the smallest and largest sizes and not the middle size.

Sorry for the second post. After thinking about it, the numbers for the hood on the middle and larger size Circle Stroller Jacket are correct. One cannot do a make one at hte end of the row. The means the P2tog at the beginning of the last purl row would be needed on the smallest and middle sizes.

dear Susan, I'm knitting the frog binky clip (which I love) but I'm having problems with the bobbles and the leaves. I've tried several different ways to get the bobbles to look more finished but they still just look like wads of yarn... any suggestions I might not have thought about? Also your leaves look super pointed at the end and the knit side looks nice and straight. Mine look all wonky and sad... how are you making the tips so nice? Thanks so much

ReplyDeleteI just wanted to thank you for the incredible texture blanket pattern. I finished it recently for my second cousin's first baby and it is absolutely beautiful. It took me almost a year to finish but I learned so much by making it ... all of the different patterns and picking up stitches to add a border. The entire book is gorgeous and the pattern could not have been written better. I am part of a handwork group and everyone has been so intrigued by the project. Thank you so much for all of your talent and thanks for sharing it with the rest of us.

I have finished the first batch of decreases for the sleeve, and am down to the required 40 stitches for the 6-12 month size. I am about to start the next batch of decreases, but I am confused. For the 6-12 month size, the pattern says to work the decrease row every other knit row 4 times and that 34 stitches will remain. If I decrease by 2 stitches 4 times, shouldn't I go from 40 stitches down to 32 stitches instead of 34? Help please!

In the back of the book you talk about using mattress stitch and I think I will try that but I wanted to mention that I can't seem to see instructions.
