I have been wanting to knit an elefante in left over sock yarn for quite some time now. Yesterday I pulled out my remaining yarntini in the appletini color way and plunged right in. I used US size 3 dpns and it turned out as cute as a button. What a great way to use up the sock yarn remnants sitting in your stash. You should try this, it works like a charm.
This pattern has been such fun to watch. I wrote it up about one year ago and it has taken on a life of its own. As of today there are 231 finished elefantes posted on ravelry and 1185 in people's queues. Elefante is #14 in popular toy patterns on ravelry as well. I love that. Every day this pattern gets tons of hits on my blog and that makes me so happy.
In honor of this stripey friend and the joy this blog brings me, I am having my first giveaway!
Leave a comment on this post, you don't have to say much, even a simple hello is fine. I will accept comments for this contest through Friday, April 11, 12:00pm central time.
On Saturday, April 12th, I will have one of my kids randomly draw (I will take pictures of the process and post them) the winner. I will post the winner by the name left on the comment that same day! The winner will then need to email me with a mailing address (kept private) so I can send elefante to its new home. I can't wait.
**I will include a couple more surprises (having to do with knitting, of course) in the package. They are good surprises having to do with some of my favorite things!**
I want to sincerely thank you, dear Knitters, for your knitterly support over this past year and a half. I love this blog. It has become a home to me and hopefully to you, too.
Cheers!
best, susie
Morning Susan, I simply can't express how much your blog and books have inspired me. At 23 it seems like all of my friends are getting married and having kids, with your patterns I've been able to make some adorable and priceless gifts. Thank you for this adorable pattern! Its next on my list to knit.(is it weird I check your blog from my phone, while I wait for my professor to start class?)- Lucia
ReplyDeleteI have been meaning to make elefante for my to-be-born-any-day-now little girl, but haven't gotten to it! I do have 2 super-cute itty bitty hats waiting for her, though! Thank you for the lovely patterns. -Lisa
ReplyDeleteGreetings Susan!! How exciting would it be to have a toy knit by the designer!! It would be an honored prize. I love your patterns and have knit many of them for friends and family.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning! Elephante is high on my summer knitting list - my daughter wants one and these colors are perfect for her room. I'm finishing grumpy old bear for my mother for Mother's Day (including the scarf and sweater so he can be an all seasons bear). I made about 12 of the baby Santa hats for Christmas gifts - they are so cute and everyone loved them. I've also made several sets of booties. Hope this is coming off as fan mail and not stalker mail!! Have a great day!
ReplyDeletehello, i will be 48 on april 21st. i love this little elephant.

ReplyDeleteHilary

Cute elefante! My daughter loves elefantes and she calls them such (we speak a little Spanish here sometimes), this one will be a great little stuffie for her.
ReplyDeleteSusan I am a brand new knitter. I have knitted a scarf and now I am knitting the patch baby blanket from itty bitty nursery. I have 3 more colors to go. I am so excited. Who heard of someone knitting only a scarf and then a baby blanket. I am looking forward to knitting some of the hats from itty bitty hats too.
ReplyDeleteLaQuetha
I love the elephant! I am a new knitter and... well, it gets easier, right? Actually, over the last month it has gotten easier and I am enjoying it. I'm still making scarfs, but I have big plans. By the way, I love elephants!
ReplyDeleteStripy Elefante in our house? Who wouldn't love that. My Ravelry queue is so big I don't know where to start. Maybe looking at my stash would be a good place to begin! Thanks for the blogging - its great.

ReplyDeleteBetz

hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI recently discovered your blog and i enjoy the inspiration you provide. Thank you! I think i will go knit an elephant for my son....Joy
Hi Susan, Elefante is darling! I have been following your blog ever since I had the pleasure of meeting you at The Yarnery, in St. Paul. My daugher knit the bunny hat for her son Will from your hat book; he looks adorable - but then again Grandma's are kind of biased :)
ReplyDeleteI love how that sock yarn looks as an elephant. Thanks for suggesting this use!
ReplyDeleteHi Susan: Your Elefante is so cute. I can't wait to get home from work and dump out my stash, grab some leftover sock yarn and cast on. I'm actually wondering if I'm feeling a little ill and should go home early :)
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog! I have the Itty Bitty Hats book and LOVE it. Thank you for making such CUTE patterns for babies.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog (and books)! While I've never read a blog before, I now have become addicted to reading yours. Thanks for all the fun cute ideas and inspiration.
ReplyDelete-Sara in MN
Ooh I love this pattern! I just knit my first elefante and it is sooooo cute. I am dying to knit more now, both for my soon to be born baby and for others too. Love it! Your latest is just precious. And I have to tell you, I learned to crochet (sort of) for this pattern following your video instructions on the blog. So thank you!
ReplyDeleteDoes the darling cake stand come with it ;)
ReplyDeleteLove his colors!
Annie
The elefante is beautiful -- and in my two favorite colors as well. :) I read your blog each time it is updated and want to say thankyou for all your inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThose stripes are just too perfect! I have been loving this pattern (just needing a little shove to get back into the knitting).
ReplyDeleteAre you willing to ship internationally?
Oh, he is precious! I need to try one of those myself! Unless, of course, I win yours :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the fun giveaway!
What a cutie he is.I might even have to try one myself.Love your blog, great insperation.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteYour striped Elefante is adorable. I may have to pause my obsessive sock knitting to create one of my own.
Laura
I would love to win elefante but if I don't I just might try to create one for myself! I purchased your Surefire hat before Christmas to make 4 of them for gifts and I love making them so much I am still creating them for nephews and friend's kids! (I love finding something I love to knit that the kids like to wear!) Just wanted to let you know how much I love your creations and I've given your books away to friends to "create" for their soon to arrive "grandbabies".
ReplyDeleteKris in Rochester, NY
Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI've made an elefante for my little one, who's also due any day now. It is his/her only homemade toy so far, and I love it (unfortunately, last time I checked on the pattern page, mine isn't listed yet). I'm hoping to make at least one more, when I know whether to knit in blue or pink - it would be wonderful to have a whole collection of them!
Thanks for all you do - you're a real inspiration :-)
~ Ellie
I love the appletini elephante!! A friend and I are planning to jointly knit the tea set in Itty Bitty Nursery at some point...that has got to be the cutest thing every!!
ReplyDeleteAfter meeting you at Knitting for Noggins I've been checking out your blog. It's so much fun to see what you are up to and I have found out about some wonderful web sites from you. After you mentioned ravelry.com on one of your posts I decided to see what it was. It is such a great web site I'm so glad I found out about it. Thanks for all the great info you put on your blog.
ReplyDeleteOpal
how can you not love an elefante that is pink & green? my oh my.
ReplyDeleteOOOOO< I love Elefante. It is on my list of things to do.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win this because it would make the perfect baby gift for my new neice or nephew expected to arrive 3/11 or 3/12. The best part? Their last name is Fendt (pronounced Fendt, as in Elephant :D)
Thanks for your generosity and sharing so much in your blog. It inspires me to try new things being the novice knitter that I am!
Thanks again!
Kim in WI
Hi there Susan, love your books, blog and this elephant. I love the colors, and after I finish working on the brightly colored one I am working on, I think I've been inspired to do another one with sock yarn. The pattern is fun, as are many of yours. Thanks again for inspiring so many of us, and for this great contest. Pick me, pick me ...pi...ck...m....e!! Thanks
ReplyDeleteSuzanne

ReplyDeleteNoelle
I love your elefante!! I have the appeltini colorway in sportweight and am thinking of making some gloves with it!!
ReplyDeleteI have both of your books - Itty Bitty Hats and Itty Bitty Nursery. I love them both and have made several of the hats for friends with children or for the cedar chest for my own kids some day. I love your blog - what you say,the wonderful color it has and I love seeing all of your projects. Keep up the great work - reading one of your new posts is the highlight of my work day! Brandy
ReplyDeleteAdorable! I would love to have this darling toy (and it would motivate me to knit my own!)...
ReplyDeleteThanks for your beautiful work.
Love your elefante! Though I'm a fairly new knitter, I've crocheted several little animals for my kids and they always want more. I have all boys, so if I win, Elephante would be mine! :) love your blog. - Chris in MI
ReplyDeleteHi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy reading your blog and seeing what you are knitting. You've inspired me to print your elephante and give it a try with some pretty sock yarn. I teach knitting 101 and recently lent a student my copy of your Itty Bitty Hats book to make her first hat. I was very impressed with how well written the pattern was. I didn't have to explain a thing. It was all there in the book.
Thanks,
Francie Owens
Franklin, TN
Oh, I would love to have an appletini Elefante! I've had my own Elefante on my needles for quite some time now, maybe an Elefante friend will inspire me to finish. I love your blog and your books, keep up the fun knitting!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Brittney
What a cute elephant!!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to dig out some leftovers too ;)

ReplyDeletei made your elefante - used pink microspun from lionbrand. stuffed with micro pellets. my kids love it.
thanks for being so generous.
amy
I love everything about this little elefante (even the spelling!), but I especially love it in this self-striping sock yarn. I even love that the yarn name is Appletini as I am a big fan of the show Scrubs. It would mean a lot that it was knit by you, the designer. As a fellow Wisconsinite, I take great pride in your talent. Judy R.
ReplyDeleteI love Elefante, I keep wanting to knit one and I am accumulating some left over sock yarn ;-)
ReplyDeleteIf I can win him in the meantime, I will have to still try and knit one myself to give him a playmate.
Thank you Susan for all your wonderful patterns.
(((Hugs)))
It is too cute! It's on my list of potential projects, but I probably have a better chance of winning this one than knitting one myself.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing!

I am knitting prayers, good thoughts, and a tear or two into this one. I knit so many hats that I haven't had time to make any
elephants (yet). Looking forward to the next book. I hear you will be back in town for the book fair. Will there be a new book then? Kim

Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and ideas for knitting. Please enter me into your giveaway as I love your elefante! i also look at your blog from my iphone!
Laura
the cutest thing ever. Thanks for all your inspiration!
ReplyDeleteYet another lurker here ... love your books and your blog! I'm also working on a Grumpy Old Bear right now, except this one uses a bulky worsted weight wool that's been in the stash way too long, and was a perfect 'bear' color. He'll be a little larger than your model, but that's okay. I knit a lot of toys for a friend's center that provides therapy for abused kiddos - they try to give something 'huggable' to every child they counsel. Anyways, I think an elefante would be a great next project for them. Thanks for the great designs! (Now hurrying off to Ravelry to see what else they feature under toys - why have I not looked there before??)
ReplyDeleteThe elephant is adorable! I have some gifts to make and think I'll make him!
ReplyDeleteMy kids used to call elephants "Edifeedies" when they were little. LOL.
Hi Susan,

Oh my gosh....I feel like it is Oprah's big give away! 165 comments already! I can't imagine how many you will have by 4/11. Your book "Itty Bitty Hats" was my first inspriation. The hats in it were the very first things I could knit that I felt proud of when I was done! Your blog listed in your book was such a great thought. I never knew about blog world until I checked out yours. It is another of my favoite hobbies. I don't know what I like best knitting, reading knitting blogs or my collection...which is becoming a library....of knitting books! Thank you so much for bringing me into the knitting world!

Susan,
ReplyDeleteI love the colors of this little guy! When I get online to read your blog my 2 year old sees Elephante every time and throws a fit to have him.....maybe if we are lucky she might just get one of her own! I love your blog and your books are the best. You were right that I could learn to knit with your books! Thanks ever so much for everything that you do! Have a great week!

Susan, my daughter is going to bless us with a granddaughter soon ~ your little elefante would be so precious in her nursery, an he's the perfect color! Please include me in your drawing. :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Trish
Hi. Love the pinks and greens. Huge fan of your books. I would be honored to be included in the drawing. I can see my one year old neice with it screaming "ooooohhhhh" every time she see it. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI love the Appletini Elefante. I appreciate the idea of using a thinner yarn for him. Since I spend my knitting time making things for the boys which they will quickly outgrow, I wanted to make something for myself with the yarns I used to make things for them - I am still toying (no pun intended) around with the idea of making a blanket for myself starting from the middle with all the leftover yarns. Thanks for your inspiration. I'm mnashawati on Ravelry. Have a wonderful day. Melissa
Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for all your sharing!!
Love your patterns, love the blog!!
Have a wonderful day!!

Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteYour blog is something I check daily because I enjoy it so much! I have made nearly every Itty Bitty hat for the children in my life (a fair number going to my son) and I always receive tons of compliments. I have yet to knit a toy, but Elefante is definitely going to be my first attempt!
Thanks so much, Michael-Lyn
I have been wanting to knit this pattern for a long time!
ReplyDeleteYour pink & green elefante is so adorable :D
Hi Susan! I'm a new knitter and just found out I'm expecting #4...can't wait to start knitting this bean LOTS of hats. Your little elephant is also going on the list. Can't wait to start!
ReplyDeleteOh sweet elefante - we'd be more than happy to give you a home... we promise a lifetime of felted peanuts and a ban on household mice (knitted ones included). We have a wee boy that would cherish you and hopes of another wee one on the horizon...

My baby girl on the way already has a stash of itty-bitty hats and I am working through an assortment of goodies from itty-bitty nursery for her too (starting with the sweet layette!). I'd be honored to include Elefante in our home.

Susan...I just started knitting a few months ago for a Grand-niece who arrived on March 31, 2008! I've knitted some booties from Itty-Bitty Nursery but I'm not quite ready to tackle my own Elefante. However, I'm sure our baby girl would be " tickled pink" with YOURS! ( hint, hint)
ReplyDeleteMy grandaughter is sitting here on my lap begging me to get that elephant for her. She thinks I can get it out of the computer. :)

Hi Susan,
