How to Weave in Ends Tutorial

Hi Knitters,
I had my son video me as I wove in the ends on a Rainbow Marley hat from Itty-Bitty Hats. You will see how quickly and easily this can be done!
best, susie

  1. I love that in 7 minutes you just proved that it isn't that big of a deal.

  2. Do you know how long I've been waiting for this very tutorial! EXCELLENT! I do want to clarify that you said you only do a half knot--no full knots. I think I'm paranoid all my hard work will come apart!

  3. Hi Carisa,
Yes, I tie the new yarn color on to the old yarn with a half-knot. I cut the old color leaving a few inches and then I start knitting with the new color.

    Easy-peasy!

  4. Ok, so I am one who loathes weaving in ends and I think it's because I weave and weave and weave. Only 4 purl bumps?? That's great news! Next time...

I see your Itty Bitty Toy book! Can't wait !!!!

  5. I guess I've always weaved in more than necessary as well. However, I have problems with the ends working themselves loose eventually, especially when the project is a loose knit like a scarf. Suggestions?

Also, I have a question about pom making. I made the bunny rattle from IBN for my baby (who LOVES it, btw), but I had to remove the poms on the scarf because they were coming apart and posed a choking hazard. Do you ever have that problem with your poms? If not, how can I avoid it?

Also, I think I mentioned before that I used jingle bells in place of the super glued bead holders to make the jingling...now I'm thinking that wasn't such a good idea since it means that the rattle can't be machine washed. (Figuring that the jingle bells will rust if washed). What about the super glued bead holders? Did you intend the rattle to be machine washable? It goes right to the mouth, of course.

  6. This was so great to watch! I adore stripes, esp on baby or kid hats, and I dread the ends...but I do still make them. You just showed me that I take it too seriously. My cause for complaint? 1. I don't leave long enough ends, so it makes it harder. 2. I think I need to vary the rows up a bit so I weave down or up as well. 3. I split the purl bump to make sure it doesnt' show...but I just learned I can change all that and make my love of stripes even more enjoyable!

    thanks!

Hey Susan, Thanks for this video..so helpful. Question, I often see you displaying your baby hats on a styrofoam ball which is then placed on a metal stand. What size ball do you use? Liz

  8. Paws,
You can always tie a tiny half knot at the end when you weave in and snip the end very close to the knot if you are having trouble with the ends coming loose.

I haven't had that trouble with pom-poms but definitely remove them if they are coming apart.

I guess I didn't intend for the bunny rattle to be machine washable because of the embroidered face, pom-poms mainly. Hand wash probably would work best for that. Superglue is not water soluble so the bead container should be fine when immersed in water.

  9. Liz,
That is a manufactured hat stand and the ball for the head is made from fabric and it is stuffed, not styrofoam.

I don't know where it is from or a brand name. I have two of them and I have never seen any like it since I got mine many, many years ago. The store where I bought them is long gone.

  11. Thanks for the video Susan, I guess my issue has always been the need to tie and double tie until there are more knots than stripes. But if you are sure this quick and easy method works, I will stop double knotting, weaving, and knotting again. Stripes, here I come!

  12. Great video! Weaving in the ends has never bothered me, I find it just as relaxing as the knitting myself. However, I think your way appears much simpler. Thanks for sharing!

  14. Fantastic video - do you weave ends in the same way when you crochet? You do not have the purl bumps but am guessing that this same idea would work for crochet. Thanks for your help.

  16. Great video! Yea, you totally simplified it from how I usually weave in ends. I also love the idea of doing a half knot and then weaving. I usually don't knot, but weave a ton to compensate. I like your idea better. Thanks Susan!! :)
