Knitting Down Memory Lane

Hi Knitters,
How cute is that crazy stripey sock? I love everything about it. When switching the yarns while working I can't help but to remember where I was, what I was knitting with the yarn, which trip I was taking, what season it was, who I gave the finished socks to...

Well, you get it. It's like taking a stroll down memory lane. These socks are telling a story, like a little piece of personal history, and it is making me fall in love with them even more. I didn't expect that.

Are you gathering your scraps, your odds and ends, your bits and pieces,  your own personal yarn story? I am having a lot of fun ideas for this sort of sockalong. I'll tell you exactly how I am making mine and I will most likely do a few different versions.

If you have a good idea for naming these scrappy socks please chime in. Here are some of my ideas: stroll socks, scrapbook socks, memory lane socks, scrappy socks, story socks, slow cooker socks (because it takes years to gather the yarn)... I'm not sure yet.

I'll be back soon with more.

Happy weekend and in case I'm not back before, I am wishing you all a happy mother's day.
best, susie

  1. memory lane projects are great. Right now I've got it in my head to make a crazy quilt using scrap yarns knitted up as trim and all the bits and pieces of fabric that I've collected over the years. Yes, I'm a sewer and a knitter too!

  3. I'm calling my projects: "Temporary Insanity". Cute crazy mismatched socks and hopefully a little bunny to tag along!

  4. Timeline socks is what I have been calling them in my head. I haven't started, but I love the idea. The yarn I have is worsted weight since I just started making socks. Very cute! The colors you have remind me of candy, like taffy. Enjoy and have a great Mother's Day.

I'm thinking of something along the lines of 'patchwork' because quilts traditionally are all about memories, saved scraps of fabrics from this or from that and also because of the sense of community involved in such works, something shared.

But memory patch sounds like a computer update.

These are great! People should post photos of their finished socks in the sock thread on your Ravelry group.

  12. It's looking so cute! I like story socks and memory lane socks. Or maybe reminisce, hold dear, dreamer socks, flashback socks, recollect, reflection socks, memory jog socks, revisit, reflection, or Archaeology socks.
I had a little look in my thesaurus. I'm sure you will come up with the perfect name :)

  18. I found this project awhile ago and felt drawn to it too. Since I've only completed two pair of socks, I think it will be awhile in the making! But I'm putting it here in case you have too little to add to a sock (if you are being symmetrical) you might get one of these teeny squares done.

I'm now buying yarn to make socks that I think will look good in the blanket as leftovers--sheesh!

  19. I love how your socks are turning out! All the links you provided are great projects. I stumbled upon this project using leftover sock yarn the other day. Now I am buying sock yarn more for how it will look in the blanket than as socks--but my plan is to only use "scraps" of yarn for the blanket.

I thought if you still have yarn left from making a pair of socks, there might be enough to make one of these small little squares. A great travel project!

  20. What fun! I have always loved socks. Since I was little, I was known for my crazy/fun/whimsical socks. Yours are the BEST! Can't wait to see the finished pair. I am anxious to see if they are totally fraternal.

  21. Kim has left a new comment on your post "Knitting Down Memory Lane":

Just finished watching last weeks Once Upon A Time and then read this posy. The name I would like to propose is based off of that show. How about Storybrooke Socks. Or Storybrooke Lane Socks.

It's me, Susan! I am posting Kim's comment because Blogger has eaten it somehow AND just this morning I watched the first episode of Once Upon A Time! Strange coincidence!

  22. How about tell tale socks? I am curious how you will handle all the tails? Russian joins? Spit Splice? Weaving? Happy Mother's Day, Susan!

  23. The name that came to my mind is DAYDREAMING a that what you're doing as you knit - going to other places and times.

Will the second sock match the first?

  25. I LOVE your new stripey leftover sockyarn socks!! I also love Kim's (no relation) name: Storeybrook Socks. It's good. My first thought was "Nostaglsocks" or "Socks Stalgia"? See, no good, it was my 1st thought, ha ha.

Enjoy a very happy Mother's Day!!
