Sock Love

Hi Knitters,
I have fallen in love with a pair of socks. Click here to see them. Aren't the originals glorious? I am making my own version and I can't wait to finish.

By the way, click here to see the rest of this wonderful knitter's flickr photos. She is amazingly inspiring. I love everything she makes.
I started thinking about the colors in Spud & Chloƫ Fine and how they would work in a slightly different version of these socks. I am pretty thrilled with how they are turning out. I must say that Fine is pretty fine. My sock is not exactly like the original but it has a similar feel to it with the striping.
I just started this morning and I am moving right along. I am working on US size 1 dpns. Usually I work on US 2's but it seems like my socks are always a little loose so I will try the smaller size needle to see if it helps. It should.

After the rib at the top of the cuff I am working one round knit and then the next round k3, p1 and then repeating. I am really excited to try an afterthought heel which I have never done before. I have been listening to the Knitmore Girls podcast and they keep talking about the afterthought heel. I have to give it a try, it sounds so easy. I hope I remember what they said on how to do this type of heel. I didn't write it down or anything but I will trust my memory. Fingers are crossed.

I'll keep you posted on my afterthoughts of the afterthought heel. I am definitely doing the toes in different colors like in the original pair. I am in desperate need of new knit socks. TC has been wearing all of my handknit socks this winter and she is not easy on things. We just cleaned out her drawer and I pulled out five pairs of handknit socks and one without its match (which I cannot find).

Packers are on, family is gathered, Kindle is charged and sock knitting is at the ready so I don't have to watch. What a Sunday.
best, susie

  1. Beautiful!
The one time I tried an afterthought heel, I hated it and ripped back to re-knit with a regular old heel flap. Maybe you'll have better luck :)

  2. One morning when I went in to get my older daughter up for the day, I opened her sock drawer and all her socks were gone! I asked her where her socks were. She smiled and pointed to the diaper pail . . . Yep. There they were, mixed in with all those dirty diapers.

  3. Those are great socks! I've been listening to the Knitmore Girls talk about the after thought heel and I am totally intrigued. I look forward to hearing about your experience with it!

  4. I love the color combination! TC is so cute to be such a big fan of your knitting that she must have it for yourself. Only a true, loving daughter would do that. You are so good at not wasting yarn. Can't wait to see the final results!

  6. Caryn,
I don't know where the pattern is for these socks. I am just making them up using the photo as a guide for inspiration.

  7. Well, Susan, if you can, I'd also love the pattern for these socks! Ya know, in your spare time. :)

  8. Oh, I won't be writing up the pattern for these socks. I am using someone else's photo to make them. You could take any simple ribbed or stockinette stitch pattern and plug in the stripes.

I have a free ribbed sock pattern on Spud says! that you could use.

  9. I love the socks. I think yours is as pretty as the original. Keep us posted on your progress. BTW - How is your spinning going?
Was wondering if you could mail me what other podcasts you listen to? I'm in the market to start getting back on the treadmill and need some entertaining podcasts to get me going!
    Thanks!

  10. I haven't knitted a pair of proper socks yet , only the baby sock from Spud Says (don't get me wrong, I love the baby socks dearly, but I mean socks with sock yarn). There's too much I want to knit...

  12. Almost forgot --I didn't care for the afterthought heel much either. I could see how it might work for a child's sock but I like the feeling of the flap and gusset- just my 2 cents on the subject Andrea in TN
