Hey Susan,
ReplyDeleteDid you see, did you see?
Check out the blog!

Thanks, Susan!
ReplyDeleteLauren
Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI love both of your books and blog. I am now working on the Football hat from Itty Bitty Hats and am having a problem with doing the first row of seed stitch in the round. I am doing the 6-12 month size which ends up with 72 stitches for the "cast on" row. After that it calls for four rounds of seed stitch. However, I need an odd number of stitches to do seed stitch in the round. I don't see an errata for this pattern on the site, and maybe I am doing something wrong. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks,
Allyn
Hi Allyn,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words.
For the seed stitch question, I kept the number of stitches even to keep things easy for the decrease rounds. I don't mind having, at the back, the last stitch and the first stitch of the round being the same stitch (a knit or purl).
If that bothers you just add an extra stitch to those rounds to make an uneven number, then decrease one stitch when you get to the stockinette rounds for the hat.
Good luck,
susan
I'm trying to knit the felted flower child. The pattern says to cast on 378. Is it supposed to be 278? The decreasing isn't working out.
ReplyDeleteLainie,
ReplyDeleteThe numbers are correct.
Make sure you knit 1 stitch, then repeat (knit two stitches together) to the last stitch, then knit the last stitch.
The first and last stitch are the only stitches knit by themselves, the rest are knit 2 together.
Do the same thing on the next row only purl the stitches.
Good luck, susan
Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI've made & love your Stripey Stocking Cap. The directions after seed stitch are:
Rnds 1-6: Knit all
Switch color
Rnd 7: Purl all
I've following that but my hats don't get the contrast color (for example in your book the sage peeps thru on the blue, blue on the border of orange, etc) between the colors. What am I doing wrong? I hope I make sense! Thank you :)
Laura
Hi Laura,
ReplyDeleteIf you knit in one color and then change to a new color and purl the next round you should get the same look as the hat I knitted for the sample.
I just figured out I've been doing the purl stitch wrong! Once I corrected it, it looks the same! Whoops....Thank you!
ReplyDeleteLeah,
ReplyDeleteA newborn's head is usually around 12-13 inches on average. All of the hats in itty-bitty hats are worked with 1-2 inches of negative ease to make a snug cap. The knitted fabric is very stretchy and fits easily on a newborn-size head. If you are concerned just go up to the next size.
As far as the 16-inch needles, I knitted all of the hats on 16-inch circular needles. I can fit 56 stitches on a 16-inch needle, the first few rounds are tight but then it eases up significantly. If you are having trouble with 16-inch circs, feel free to switch to 12-inch circular needles or knit the entire hat on your double-pointed needles.
I've made several of your itty bitty hats as gifts, and the recipients are always wowed. I always give you the design credit, I just follow the directions! My 26 year old wants me to "biggen" the Marley hat that I made for my grandson out of my stash scraps for her as well. She loves the topper on it.I haven't attempted yet, perhaps next winter. Thanks for the book!!
ReplyDeleteHi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI'm making the the Upside-Down Daisy hat in Itty Bitty Hats. What do you do with the last 3 stitches left on the the needle after completing each petal? Are they bound off? or what? I'm trying to finish this, but not sure what to do .
Chris
Hi Chris,
ReplyDeleteBind off the remaining stitches. I will add this to the corrections. Thanks for writing.
susan
I'm making the 1-2 yr old felted flower hat and I'm stuck on round 12. I have 96 stitches when I start but after I do all the k11, k2tog I have 5 stitches left over. Should it read knit 8(9,10) knit 2 together?
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Katy
Susan,
ReplyDeleteI just discovered your wonderful knitting books and I was wondering if you might be able to help me create a pattern for a hat that I found a picture of but would like to recreate. I am a teacher and would like to create the hat for a co-teacher shown in the picture on http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32795587/ns/today-parenting_and_family - picture #4 (red with black and white polka dot ribbon and black button). I would like to also design a blanket to match it. I think it is precious! Can you PLEASE help me? I would be SO grateful!
Thank you.
Pam
Pam,
ReplyDeleteI am sorry but I don't have time to design a hat and blanket for you. You could try to go to a local yarn shop near you to see if someone there could help out.
Best of luck,
susan
Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI am really enjoying your Itty-Bitty Hats book:) I am currently trying to make a baby hat for my sister. It's the Felted Flower child hat. I don't know if I am doing this wrong or what but I cast on 344, then knit 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together all the way to the end and I don't end up with 173. It's more like 228. I have re done and re counted this 3 times, even using your tip to put a stitch marker every 50 stitches. Can you help?
it's k1 stitch. Then repeat k2tog to the end of the row. It will basically cut the number of stitches in half.
ReplyDeletesusan
Hi Susan, I just love your hats - they're wonderful. I have a question about the 'ribbons' hat. The sizes listed are for newborn(0-6 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years, 2 years and up).....a total of 5 sizes. But the instructions seems to only give instructions for 4 sizes....right? Or am I missing something?
ReplyDeleteThanks for your help.
Jacy
Hi Jacy,
ReplyDeleteThat correction is already listed above under Ribbons hat.
Have fun with your hat!
susan
Lordy me, now I see it. Thanks! Wow, I was feeling crazy for a moment.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Jacy
Hi Jacy,
ReplyDeleteThere is the size correction listed above in the corrections (I copied and pasted it for you) as follows:
Ribbons
p. 149
The newborn size is not included in the pattern. Under size, it should read 0-6 months (6-12 months, 1-2 years, 2 years and up).
The cast on numbers are as follows: 64 (72, 80, 88) stitches.
Hope this helps.
susan
Thanks Susan!
ReplyDeleteI was reading too fast and only saw the second Ribbons correction, not the one listed closer to the top of the page.
Alright, back to knitting for me.
Love your stuff!
I want to put a tulle topping on top of the hat I just finished from your book. The instructions say that each strip should be 20 inches long, but for the life of me I can't find how *wide* they should be. Did I miss it somewhere? Please help!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I love this book; I'm about to start my third hat!!!
babyboxermom:
ReplyDeletei think the toule is about 3 inches. it's the toule on a spool. the width can vary, it won't make much difference.
have fun,
susan
Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI'm working on the pink paper bag hat. I just finished the eyelet row in Rosa Rugosa. Two rounds later, it says to switch colors and finish in seed stitch for 2 inches. That would leave the hat finishing in Bermuda Sand, but the picture shows the top of the hat in Rosa Rugosa. Should I just continue to the end of the hat with Rosa Rugosa? Thanks!
You should finish the pink paper bag top in the color you'd prefer. If you like the photo, then finish in the Rosa. I've seen the hat done in so many colors and they all look great.
ReplyDeleteGood luck and have fun.
susan
Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI'm working on another one of your GREAT hats, the felted flower in the largest size and I'm ending up with 89 stitches at the end of round 12? The pattern says I should end up with 88. I had 96 before beginning row 12 and I knit 11 then k2tg so... I had a total of 7 k2tg's. I'm just wondering if the largest size should be 89 stitches remaining on row 12? Also, the knit 11, knit 2 together doesn't work out evenly. Is that correct? Thanks so... much for your help!
Jenn :)
Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI love your books. I've knitted most of the hats in Itty Bitty Hats, some of them several times. I'm having problems with the picot trim on the Little Chick hat. On page 74, round 2 of the picot trim should not have an asteric. I think it should be repeated from Knit 1 stitch. Am I right?
Chris
Susan,
ReplyDeleteI feel like an idiot, but I am having trouble figuring out how to assemble the Marley Topper from the "Hats" book. In rolling up the curly strip "along the bottom row", does that mean to roll up one strip, leaving 7 curls, or do you roll it up from the point where the curls all originate, so that there are 8 dangling curls? Then, do you attach the next three curly strips to the outside of the first one in concentric circles?
Is there a step-by-step illustration, or a photo of the curly pom from above? It would help visual learners like me!
Thank you SO much. I love love love your books.

Thanks for responding so quickly! I apologize for not seeing the video link before (I feel like an even bigger idiot now). It is EXACTLY what I needed!!
ReplyDeleteFrom one Wisconsinite to another, thank you again. :)

P.S. Any chance that you will do a book with patterns for bigger kids? My nieces are growing at an alarming rate!
I have been trying to make the marshmallow bonnet in an adult size (female)and have been having a bit of trouble. I don't suppose you have that configuration handy or have any tips for me? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Chae,
ReplyDeleteI don't have bonnet sizing handy for an adult woman. Sorry about that.
I think you will just have to pull out a tape measure and measure your head and then use the gauge to figure out how many stitches to cast on. You can kind of place it on your head to figure out how long to knit before making the back flap.
susan
Hey Susan,
ReplyDeleteFirst let me say thank you! I would have never learned to continental knit if I hadn't picked up your book and needed to know in order to do the seed stich. It's just not an easy stitch to do throw-over style.
I'm making the football hat for the first time and really don't understand the directions for the looped top. Are there any pictures of the way it's supposed to look? The picture in the book is not clear on top.
Thanks,
Steph

Glad you are having fun!
susan
Hi Susan, you're my new hero!!!
ReplyDeleteI live on the other side of the world from my mum, so have learned to knit watching youtube videos and using knitting books, but always found it quite difficult - until I came across ITTY BITTY HATS. I cast on for "simple baby hat 1" a couple of days ago and last night finished it and I am hooked!! Can't wait to start the next hat. I find your instructions absolutely brilliant - and I loved reading that you learned to knit using an instruction manual, it definitely encouraged me to keep going. And finding this blog today has totally made my day - when the kids are asleep tonight I'll be having a good long read on here!
Thanks for such a brilliant book, you're awesome!
Susan: In your book 'itty bitty hats" on page 81 there are a pair of booties....do you sell the pattern? I would like it.
ReplyDeletechris O
I love your patterns, thank you. I do have one question... I am working on the felted flower hat and am doing the smallest size. At the end of row row2 I have 80sts, at the end of row 12 I end up with 73 sts instead of 72. I have gone over and over this, what am I missing?
ReplyDeleteFelted Flower question:
ReplyDeleteI think you found an error so thank you!
Row 2 for the smallest size:
(knit 8 sts, k2tog) repeat to the end of the round should give you 72 stitches.
If you don't want to pull back just decrease one stitch on your next round by knitting 2 sts together at the beginning of the round and knit on ahead. It won't make any difference.
Thank you!
susan
To add to my question about the med size of the felted flower child hat should I be casting on 346 that would the 88sts at the end of row 2 is that correct or am I reading the pattern wrong
ReplyDeleteIf you end up with 88 stitches then that is fine. It doesn't matter if you are a stitch or two off on the p2tog part. 88 is the number you want to continue on with.
ReplyDeleteMrs.Anderson,
ReplyDeleteI am knitting your first hat in itty-bitty baby hats. How do finish round four in the decrease sequence I have put on the double pointed needles but they don't go all the way around.
Am I doing something wrong?
I am in a rush to know as my Mother laves for the philippines on Friday as a midwife and is supposed to take it with her.
the double pointed needles form a triangle with stitches on each of the needles so they should fit around. Is there a knit shop nearby or do you know any knitters who can help you in person?
ReplyDeleteHi Susan-
ReplyDeleteI am new to following patterns and making hats and your book is very easy to follow. I usually design my own knitted or crocheted blankets, so am enjoying the challenge of making things to gauge and reading a pattern. Not sure if it is my lack of experience, but am having trouble with the football hat. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to leave the eight stitches on the top of the hat on the needles before moving on to the finishing? Does the sprout connect to the unfinished top or am I supposed to finish the top and then do the sprout seperate? Also, I am uncertain which side is the front and which is the back? I have 18 stiches on one side (between ear flaps) and 14 on the other. Is the larger side the front? I am thinking the safety pin marking my round is the center of the back but I couldn't see that it clearly said and I didn't want to sew the football to the wrong side.
Thanks!
Sandy
Sandy - Finish the top (cut the yarn and pull through the rem. stitches) and add the sprout after the hat is finished. I did a video tutorial for the sprout, it is on the sidebar of my blog.
ReplyDeleteThe larger number of stitches is the front. The pin or stitch marker is the back of the hat.
susan
Susan, I am making your dot hat (itty bitty p. 116-117.) I am confused by the picture. The pattern makes a square hat like the olive hat (at least the way it turned out for me), but the picture shows a hat with a contour and points on the top. How do you get that look?
ReplyDeleteDear Susan,
ReplyDeleteI have had trouble with the turning row on the "Marshmallow Bonnet." Should the instructions be "Knit 1, *YO, K2tog,* repeat between *s, end with Knit 1? (Even that doesn't work mathematically with the number of stitches given, which is an odd number, but it makes more sense.) I think I'm going to take the advice from elsewhere on a picot edge and K2tog, YO, repeat, end with K1.
Dear Susan,
ReplyDeleteI am knitting your adorable upside-down daisy hat, and I just have to sew on the petals. I have never sewed knitting to knitting before, and I am wondering if you could point me toward correct technique for this. I've tried looking online, but the techniques listed are for knitted fabrics, not hand-knitting. Do I go along the edge of the petals? Or maybe hide the sewing by duplicating the stitch on top? I'd appreciate your suggestion of either a technique to use, or a reference I could look this up in. Thank you so much for your whimsical patterns!
Charlotte
Hi Charlotte,
ReplyDeleteIn the book, Itty-Bitty Hats, there is an illustrated tutorial on whipstitching an applique onto knitted fabric. You are basically going through a stitch on the applique and then a stitch on the hat around the outer edge.
susan
Thank you, Susan. I had borrowed this book from the library and returned it already, so I didn't realize there was a tutorial in the back that I would still need. Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteCharlotte
Hey Susan!
ReplyDeleteI just recently bought your book Itty Bitty Hats and can't wait to start the upside-down flower hat for our family friend's baby girl!
thanks again!
I love your Itty Bitty Hats book and am on my third hat. However, I wondered why you don't include general weight information about the yarns needed to simplify substitutions. I found that several of the yarns suggested are no longer available and/or are hard to find. Also, I just knitted the upside-down daisy hat with the yarns recommended and when I gently soaked it in Woolite, the pink color bled into the white petals! Such a disappointment! I have contacted Rowan about this.
ReplyDeleteJust starting the football hat -- finished flaps and seed stitch (added a stitch and did seed stitch across the flaps). My question is this, which I need to know when I attached the football. Which side is the front? The one with more stitches (18) or less? (14)?
ReplyDelete18 is the front:)
ReplyDeleteHi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI just purchased your Itty Bitty Hat Book so I realize that many years have passed since you originally designed and knit those patterns. When I knit a pattern for the first time I like to use the yarn and frequently the colors the pattern suggests. However I cannot find the grey #3795 Tahki Cotton Classic listed in your Pastel Marley hat. I can't even find a picture of it on yarndex in it's currently produced or discontinued line so as to be able to match it to another color. I have managed to track down every other color you suggest and would love to be able to use the grey as well. I was wondering if you could suggest a similar color in that line so I can do my best to maintain the original integrity (for lack of a better word) of the hat.
Thank you so much for your time and for sharing your darling hats!
Ashley
I just made the Ribbons Hat - OMG so easy and adorable with Tulle Ribbons all in pink the ultimate Girly Hat.
ReplyDeleteHi Susan a quick question on the Marshmallow bonnet if I wanted the trim to be a different color do I cast on with my color b is that the brim of the hat will it work or am I better off leaving it all one color
ReplyDeleteYou could cast on with a different color for the trim, however, if I remember correctly the brim is turned under to make a picot edge so you'll want to plan accordingly.
ReplyDeleteHi Susan
ReplyDeleteI'm knitting your adorable itty bitty upside down daisy hat but cannot seem to get the piece between the crown of the hat (pink) and the stem right - its skinny and wrong looking. Ive ripped it back three times now and can't seem to get it to work. Please please help!!
Ruth
Susan: There was an Anon. post regarding the Marshmallow bonnet and how the turning row doesn't work out mathematically. Unfortunately, didn't see an answer for it. Any chance you could clarify? Trying to finish the hat before my daughter is born in the next few days ;-)
ReplyDeleteAmber
Amber -
ReplyDeleteIf you remove the last knit 1 stitch at the end of the row it should work out fine. I will make note of this for future printings of the book.
k1, yo, k2tog = a multiple of 3 which works for every size.
Good luck with your new baby.
Hi Susan - please can you let me know if you can help me with my problem posted 5th March above - I'd love to finish this hat - many thanks - Ruth
ReplyDeleteMarley topper
ReplyDeleteHi Susan - I made all the topper pieces but upon finding your video I realise they are somehow wrong !!! Mine are not in a row like yours but some up and some down more like seaweed!! No matter how many times I watch the video and rip back and start again they remain the same - please help xxx ruthie
Don't worry about replying to my two questions from last month (march) you're obviously very busy. I figured them both out!
ReplyDeleteHi, Ruth,
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for the delay in my answer to your question. I do remember reading your question about the Marly Topper and I remember writing a reply that somehow didn't get posted - it must not have posted or I didn't hit the post button. I suggested possibly knitting at a tighter gauge and then laying the topper out flat on a table top to kind of organize it before rolling and stitching together.
I am so glad you figured out the how to get the topper to work on your own. That's great!
Take care and have a good weekend,
Susan
Hi, I am knitting up the Football Hat in the itty-bitty hat book and after Round 12 of the decrease sequence what should be done with the 8 live stitches that remain?
ReplyDeleteThank You
Lynne
Place the cut end on a yarn needle and pull it through the remaining stitches. Pull up tight to close the hole at the top of the hat. Pull the end through to the inside and weave in and trim.

I have tried twice to knit the felted flower child hat and at the end of knitting the first row it never comes out to the correct number of stitches.(and yes, I knit 1, knit 2 tog) At first I thought that I was doing something wrong, but I have counted 3 times and it never comes out to what the instructions say. Are there a corrections for this hat? I love this book and have made several of the hats.
ReplyDeleteI think that I have just found my mistake for the felted flower child. When it says knit 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches tog. I was knitting 1 and knitting 2, knitting 1 and knitting 2, and so on til the end. After reading a comment on someone else's post I figured out that you meant to knit 1 and for the remaining stitches knit 2 together until last stitch and then knit 1.
ReplyDeleteThe flower child hat:
ReplyDeleteIt's k1 then repeat k2tog across the round to the last stitch, k1.
I hope this helps:)
susan
Just make sure you are doing the opposite stitch on the next row. If you k1, p1 on the first row make sure on the way back you knit in the purl sts and purl in the knit sts. This will create the seed stitch regardless of the stitch count.
ReplyDeleteIf you do the same stitch on the next row (knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts) you will then get a rib.
susan
Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI want to make the upside-down daisy hat from your itty bitty hats book. The GGH Samoa yarn that you recommend for the white flower petals does not seem to be available anymore. Can you recommend a suitable alternative? I'm new to knitting so I'm not familiar with different types of yarn.
Thanks so much,
Tamar
Tamar,
ReplyDeleteAny worsted weight yarn will work. For example:
Cascade 220
Quince & Co. Lark

Dear Susan
ReplyDeleteI'm knitting the Vertical Stripes hat and I've reach the Buttercup Stripe. However it says to knit it in stockinette stitch but i don't think this is correct. Int he picture doesn't look like stockinette to me but I don't recognize what stitch it is.. I've looked on line for corrections but can't find one. Please help
Thank
Catherine
Catherine!
ReplyDeleteWow, I never noticed that before and no one has ever mentioned that. Sure enough, that does not look like stockinette stitch.
From what I can see it could be a rib or a broken rib stitch. You could always just do stockinette stitch, too.
Thanks for letting me know.
susan
I'm at work trying to knit the felted flower child hat and I'm having a problem. The dec row after the purl row says k9, k2t across to end up with 72 sts and I'm not getting it; what am I doing wrong?
ReplyDeletescoobie ~
ReplyDeleteOh, I think you may have found an error.
It should read:
Rnd 12: (k8 (9, 10) sts, k2tog) repeat ( ) to the end of the round. 72 (80, 88) sts remain.

I need help with the Twisted Stitch on your Verticle Stripes hat from Itty Bitty Hats. I do NOT understand it! Thanks!

hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteI'm working on two different sizes of the reversible stripes and dots. i'm at the point where i'm sewing straight stitches around the holes. while i am finishing the smaller one, i counted the number of holes (horizontal) on the hat one size bigger and realised it's an odd number. Now... I could probably decide on something but would like to hear of your suggestions.
Cheers,
Agnes
Hi Agnes,
ReplyDeleteI haven't looked at that pattern for so many years and I have to search around to see if I have the book. Does it not work with an odd number of holes? Also, if you have further questions, would you mind just emailing me as it is much easier to correspond that way? My email is on the sidebar of my blog.
