Here is the part where I pretend to be really smart so play along with me. I was looking at my pear cozy last night and all of a sudden I realized that it would fit an apple just as well.
Well, yes it most certainly does! Two cozies in one.
I have had many requests for this pattern already so here it goes in a very sketchy kind of way (meaning I wrote this in 5 minutes):
Pearapple Cozy:
US size 5 dpns (4 needles)
Small amount of dk/sport weight yarn
Stitch marker
Stitch marker
Scissors
Ruler
Yarn needle
Gauge: 6 stitches per inch
Here we go:
Cast on 9 stitches (3 stitches per needle on 3 dpns). Join to work in the round and place stitch marker on the first stitch of the round.
rnd 1: knit
rnd 2: kfb in each stitch (18 stitches)
rnds 3 and 4: knit
rnd 5: (k2, kfb) repeat across rnd (24 stitches)
rnd 6: knit
rnd 7: (k1, kfb) repeat across rnd (36 stitches)
rnds 8 and 9: knit
rnd 10: (k1, kfb) repeat across rnd (54 stitches)
rnd 11: (kfb, knit to last stitch, kfb) repeat this on each needle (60 stitches total, 20 stitches per needle)
Place your stitch marker on the first stitch of rnd 11. Knit for 2-inches above this marker.
Decrease rnds:
rnd 1: (k3, k2tog) repeat across rnd (48 stitches remain)
rnds 2 and 3: knit
rnd 4: (k2, k2tog) repeat across rnd (36 stitches remain)
Switch to k1, p1 rib and continue in rib for 1 inch.
Next rnd: (p2tog, purl to last 2 stitches, p2tog) repeat this on each needle (30 stitches total, 10 stitches per needle remain)
Picot bind-off:
Work loosely. *k1, place back on left needle, cast on 2 stitches on the left needle, bind off 4 stitches* repeat between * * until one stitch remains. Cut yarn, pull through the last stitch. Weave in end to the inside.
Place apple or pear inside. Give to loved one immediately!
Go crazy knitters! I want to see evidence that this pattern was put to use!
I am off in a couple of hours for Salt Lake City. See how I take care of you writing this pattern before I leave? Okay, I am totally procrastinating on packing, you got me. But I really do love my readers.
Enjoy the day.
best, susie
p.s. My son is a zebra in case you couldn't figure that out. I don't know why you couldn't, it is so life-like. And the answer is no, he didn't wear anything else for his costume.
p.p.s. Let me know if you find any mistakes. I literally wrote this from memory, which is never good, in a matter of minutes.
Happy Halloween, your 'gang' looks super cute. Nice Zebra ;-)
ReplyDeleteLove the pear cozy, but I'm not sure I'll get around to trying it. I have a ton of 'small' things I'm trying to do as gifts.
Started the cupcake hat too, and updated my blog with pics.
If I make them taller... I think they will fit perfectly around most baby bottles as well. And I'll use the chain embroidery you demo-ed to put the kid's name on it... Super cute.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pattern! I see many cute cozies with matching hats in my future.
Juliana
Thanks for the pattern!!! What a cute little idea.
ReplyDeleteGreat pic of the tribe at halloween. I bet they had an awesome time!

I just got a copy of Itty Bitty Nursery and it is gorgeous. I have made almost everything out of your first book. If you are ever looking for test knitters count me in. I love your style.

Hey Susan,
ReplyDeleteRemember that poster you were inquiring about at Needlepoint Unlimited? I think this is the link to that picture we saw:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0811860582/ref=reg_hu-wl_item-added/103-1729547-3804631
Looks like a pre-order book.
Thanks for the pattern!
Thank you for the pattern! Now, to go look through my stash.
ReplyDeleteHello Susan, Our grandchild is due today!!! I have made a bunch of hats from Itty Bitty hats for him/her. How would I increase the basic hat to make it fit an adult? I want to make matching hats for baby and mom and dad.Today I am woring on the baby's texture blanket. I ordered the Manos from Purl and love it.
ReplyDeleteKeep dreaming...

That "zebra" costume made me laugh out loud! I think there's nothing funnier than a teenage boy--this picture reminded me of my little brother when he was growing up. He'd have definitely thought the zebra was a good costume!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your trip to SLC! :)
I wanted to let you know that I made the cozy using your pattern and it came out great.

Hey, you were at Joseph-Beth in Lexington, KY a few weeks back and I picked up your books. I'm a pretty novice knitter BUT I've made the cute cardigan, hat, & booty set out of the rectangles and squares chapter and I've moved on to hats. No more do I fear knitting in the round on dpn! I know that you're working on other books right now, but my 18 mo. old is fascinated with the pictures of the babies in Itty-Bitty Hats - she has forsaken all of our old favorites and she'll bring me that particular book and we'll flip through it over and over again. So - just a thought - tell your publisher that there may be a niche for board books too. Maybe you could include a pattern for the pacifier clip in the back. I'd buy it :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cool free pattern!
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog while browsing on Ravelry and I wanted to say a big thankyou for sharing your pattern. I've been knitting on and off all my life but only 3 days ago learned to knit in the round on 4 dpns so i'm excited to try more patterns.
ReplyDeleteMy mum takes an apple to work with her each day, rolling around her bag so this will be perfect!
Thanks :)

Oh my goodness! These are the cutest things! I have Grandma working on a few for my boys. Thanks for the pattern! Love your blog over coffee in the a.m.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the pattern! My mother joked a couple of years ago that she wanted a fruit cozy to keep her snacks from bruises in her purse... I was excited to find your pattern and worked it up for her for Christmas! I used a plump fuzzy yarn and it made a nice cushy cozy... the second, smaller one I made, I crocheted a ring of DC's for the start, then picked up knit stitches around the edge. Didn't show with my fuzzy yarn and was easier to start! I posted mine on Ravelry and linked to your pattern.
ReplyDeleteso cute! i am in a cozy mod, made several for mugs and cups last week. do you mind if i translate this pattern to portuguese and publish in my blog ? please let me know. thanks so much, your cozy is brilliant :)
ReplyDeleteok, i saw your reply about my question. i will surely link back to you , thanks so much
ReplyDeletethanks for the pattern! This became my first ever successful knitting project!

ReplyDeletehi, love it. mine is too big! i think fingering wt?
ReplyDeleteNORWOOD WALKABOUTS wrote about this on her blog and I came to check it out. Thanks for sharing this pattern...I love it and can't wait to make some of my own. My son loves apples! And I'm sure putting his apple in a fun boyish colored/patterned one with his lunches when he starts school this fall will be great fun for him!
ReplyDeleteThis pattern is so nice :-) Thank you for sharing. I will make one and post the evidence on Ravelry.
ReplyDeleteHi Susan,
ReplyDeleteThanks for this cutie! It made for a wonderful teacher's gift. I've added two little green leaves to it as a little finishing touch (instructions on http://nikkisstudio.blogspot.com/2012/05/apple-fruit-cozy.html). Cheers, Daniela
Thanks for this adorable pattern. Made for my 11 year old's lunch box. Surprised her by posting pic of it on Instagram, then she discovered it on the counter later. Fun when your almost-teenager still squees with delight.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Now casting on one for me.....
-Jean
This was a fun pattern and I even practiced my two color knitting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for making it fun and easy.
Tried to post a pic but failed.☹️

Seeing this made me think you could also use them for a "yarn cake" cover to keep your yarn tidy!! Thanks for the pattern - going to give it a go and see if that works. The worst that could happen is I have and apple/pear jacket!!
