Felted Flower from Itty-Bitty Hats

Hi Knitters,
Today I have a clip about the felted flower from Itty-Bitty Hats. It is a flower made out of Manos Del Uruguay wool that is made in layers, sewn together and then felted. Each layer is made in three rows and rows 1 and 3 are both knit all stitches. The second row is the challenging row.
I have had a few questions about row 2 for this flower and that's why I decided to do a quick demonstration. There's nothing better than seeing someone do a technique "in person" to add clarity to the task.
Hopefully this will help.
best, susie

  2. I haven't done that hat yet but I want to. The tutorial helps so much. For example, I don't do socks very often because the kitchner stitch scares me. Well, I finished a pair of booties last night and you guided me through with your tutorial on the kitchner stitch! Thanks for knitting with me last night! ;)

  3. Hi Susan,

Thank you for the great videos!! So much help!!

Can I ask a question about the felted purse.....did you design the pattern or is it available somewhere? I love the shape.

    Keep up the GREAT work!!

  4. Hi Diane,
I just made that bag up and it was quite awhile ago so I don't really remember. It is just a standard felted bags and I've seen similarly shaped bags all over. I am sure you could find a pattern out there. It is made out of Manos Del Uruguay yarn.
    Good luck,

  5. Thank you!
I think I can figure a purse. I knit alot with Manos, but never felted. I guess it is time to try!

  6. I am not very computer literate and have been trying to figure out how to write you and request the possibilty of a turtorial on the Marley Hat Topper. I just can get the part where you roll up the top pieces and how to put them on the hat.
I have made just about EVERY hat in Itty Bitty Hats and have enjoyed the book and your blog tremendously!!!!! I can't wait to get Itty Bitty Nursery! (I've had it ordered since June!)

    Thanks,
    Patty

  7. Hi Patty,
How fun to hear about your knitting. Thanks for sharing that. Guess what? The Marley Hat Topper is on my list for tutorials. I just have to knit up a sample to work with. I will try to do this for my next video.
    Thanks again,

  8. Hi Susan, I'm wondering if the smaller graduating sizes of the flowers are just from shirring them each up tighter. You didn't indicate anything about changing the number of CO stitches.

  9. Hi, Gail,
    Thanks for writing:)

The layers are created by casting on different numbers of stitches to start and then to create the different size layers.

The full pattern for the flower can be found in Itty-Bitty Hats and I also have an individual pattern for a knit headband that uses the same flower technique called, Another Flower Headband (on Ravelry) that has similar layered flower options.

    I hope this helps.

  10. Susan,
I have started the Felted Flower Child hat from the Itty Bitty Hats book. I am confused about the number of stitches that should remain after working Row 1. 344 stitches were cast on initially, then a row of k1, k 2 together, repeated for the entire row. 229 stitches remained, but the pattern indicated 173 stitches should remain. Where have I gone wrong?

  11. Marion,
I don't have that book reference on-hand right now but if I remember correctly, you are to knit the first stitch and then repeat k2tog across the entire round to the end, or maybe there's another k1 at the end.

This will reduce the stitch count to about half.

    I hope this helps.

  12. It helps tremendously. I'm still learning to read knitting patterns. I guess that's obvious. Thank you so much for your quick reply.
